Please Advise - CRANKSHAFT and BEARINGS Replacement

Hey there folks,

I am new to this forum and I have an E70 N55 that has spun a bearing and was driven for a bit after. I have the whole abort mission critical engine malfunction issue coming up on the infotainment.

I had driven it to the indy shop I trusted in CA and they tested the oil and said that they would not take the job unless I paid for a swap.

WELL I dont want to swap it and am going to tackle this myself.
Could anyone advise of the following:

Can I do this from under the car (lift)? just a yes or no... please

Should I be locking the chain?

Also, is there a link here somewhere that anyone has seen this documented before?

Thanks,

BG

Rare

I don't think people have a lot of experience with this job. Seems rare - could be wrong. You are a trailblazer, of sorts, sir. You have been nominated to create a How-to.

Usually a spun bearing is a catastrophic failure of an engine that often results in significant damage to the block and other parts like connecting rods and I have never heard of anyone driving a car after a spun bearing, even for a short period. Are you sure that is what happened and are you sure you just need to place the bearing and crank and there isn't any other damage?

Also, I have a hard time believing you can do that with the engine in the car, but don't know for sure.

Yeah the car runs, just louuud and no real loss of power was detected. The car runs and there is zero smoke out of the tail pipes. Doesn't hesitate to start either.

Probably cheaper and more reliable to just buy a used engine and install it.

AM.

Yes this can be done from under the car. But keep in mind this job is not for the faint of heart. It is at least 10-15 hr job. You will need to support the engine from on top. As you will be removing the subframe and most of the suspension components to get the oil pan off. You will NOT need to lock the engine timing as you will need to spin the crank to remove each rod bearing. You'll be pushing the piston up and off the crank. Be very careful as you do not want to pull the piston too far down where it comes out of the cylinder. Then you're screwed as you'll have to pull the head off. There are video on you tube about this. You'll also have to sand the crank journal smooth before installing new bearings. Only on the one that was spun. Might as well change all the bearings while you're in there. And don't forget a new oil pan gasket. I'll be tackling this job myself in the spring.
