Reduced Power, x5 M

Hey guys,

My x5 m has been throwing the reduced power, engine malfunction warning upon acceleration. It doesn't happen all the time, only a couple times now, quickly fixed by pulling over and restarting the car. My CarlyBMW diagnostic tool is throwing a code for a misfire on cylinder 5. I can feel the reduced power and can feel when the code is about to come up. Also after fault occurs idle is pretty rough.

I am guessing its the ignition coil/spark plug. Has anyone else experienced this?

Do you think I should take it to the dealer or DIY it? Only have had the car for a month now too so a little hesitant, but I am fairly mechanically inclined.

http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1080563

^This DIY guide seems pretty thorough and quick (~roughly 2.5 hours).

Is there anything I should try to do while I have the area open to access?

Could be the fuel injectors, there is a recall for that.

To me, it sounds like it's the injector. This should help you narrow it down.

Pull the coil and the plug for cylinder #5 and put them on a different cylinder (note which cylinder) and put it back together. Next time you get the error warning read the code and see if it followed your coil/plug or if it remained with the cylinder.

If it followed the coil/plug, then only move the coil and repeat the process.

If it stayed with the cylinder, you need a new injector. Should be covered under extended warranty - check with dealer.

Mine is doing the same thing. Every time I get on it is does the same thing

reduced power, engine malfunction warning

Took it to the dealer ship and they say I need this done to it.
5. 1142260 Oil Return Cover, r&r - 50i 11/13 N $ 4171.05

6. 1113005u Oil Pan Gasket, r&r (ADD Oil & Filter) - N $ 3876.97

It uses about a quart of oil evey month or so. Not happy with this truck at all.

If you don't have the history do the coils and plugs. It's the likely cause and cheapest to fix.

Not sure what the other part is but an oil pan gasket will have no effect.

Thanks all,

Yea I'll look into the warranty part about the injectors, the vehicle is right around 62k miles, and I heard that some have replaced there plugs and coils around every 30k and I don't know when they were replaced last. Not sure about the oil pan and gasket thing, I hope its not that and it doesn't seem like restarting the car would affect those as a quick solution.

x2

If you haven't replaced the plugs yet then I'd change those anyway. You can swap your coils around to see if one went bad otherwise might be a waste of money. The PO of my truck had all of the injectors replaced and shortly after I got it all of them were replaced again, and I still had to have one of the injectors replaced a third time. They just don't last...of course when people on here complain about reliability the root cause is usually in their signature block i.e. tune, etc.

It sucks that your truck is burning that much oil but that has zero to do with your reduced power warning.

If you aren't getting a CEL/error code and the truck is back to normal after a start/stop cycle it's very likely that you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Do a quick search here, it's been discussed ad nauseam.

Basically, there are three main plastic vent pipes (one running across the top of the engine and one on each side of it running down) that can get brittle over time and a pin sized hole in one of them can cause the truck to go haywire. If your truck isn't misfiring and you only get the warning after WOT, the leak is small.

I wouldn't wait for it to get big...

Ok how would you find out if I have a leak in one of those hoses.

Visually - you'll see oil residue anywhere there is a leak on the hose from the engine blowback. Typically, you can only use that to inspect the top hose as it's the only one fully visible.

Aurally - leaks, especially small ones, are sometimes accompanied by a whistle. These trucks don't exhibit a spool whistle like you'd expect from a turbo (i.e., diesel trucks) so if you hear an obvious whistle under load, you likely have a leak.

Determining which hose is leaking is the PITA, so if you still aren't sure, find a shop that will do a boost/vacuum leak test that won't charge you an arm and a leg.

Pro-tip... buy another coil now. I had one die and within a week another failed. I went ahead and replaced all eight and kept the six known still working as spares.

V8s have a different set of problems than 6s. Coil packs are not a common failure on bmws. Not that they don’t happen, but it’s not seemingly more common than say Toyota. Fuel injectors have been a big problem areas on n63/s63 engines, but not on the 6.

Oil leaks are always a problem on bmw v8s.

Update: Fixed a couple of days ago. Followed the guide in the link above. Replaced all 8 spark plugs and coils. Only thing I needed, but should have had was some deeper 10mm sockets. Was very easy, ran into a few issues as usual, but nothing that wasn't my own fault. Running well with no issues accelerating onto the highway. Didn't buy the "M" spark plugs...
