After having many BMWs during years (mostly 7 series and 135i recently), I didn't get immediatelly that X6 might be interesting car.
I even resisted to try it. It looked big and heavy (what it is), I doubted it's capability to be comfortable and sporty. Boy, was I wrong. I live in region with lot of snow in winter and roads are far from being good. Buying right tyres is crucial both for winter and summer. After I've found than Nokian Z serie tyres are exactly what car needs (exemplarly comfortable, silent, controllable, great traction, braking) and totally unsensitive to road conditions. 90% of criticism might be resolved simply by right choice of tyres. Period. Period once again. Buy right tyres and car will behave exactly as expected, smooth on the road and very competent on reasonably off-roads situations, if such occur. In all other respects it is car that has all top BMW qualities (style, refinement, good engines, excellent options). I've chosen to buy one with 3.0L engine, as it already delivers enough power and has excellent ability to chip tuning the ECU (further 80 HP for peanuts), so I didn't see real reason to spend price difference for 100 HP more. I bought it with all options and spent bit more for additional exterior touches, as car deserves that. It looks and drives as exclusive car and I'm very sorry if many fellow BMW lovers are not in position to afford it. It would not be same car, if it would be done in cheaper fashion. So, X6 is what it is. Car for people who like bigger size, but still being in control and preferring active driving. It is not a sport car, but it can be driven dynamically with fun. 135i is naturally much better for sport oriented driving, but that's not something X6 owners didn't know when they made their choice (and very likely that for such purpose many X6 owners have second car). Although there are so many X6 haters around (as well as 7 series haters), the car mostly induces positive reaction among people. IMO X6 has its place in our world. The X6 is a great car, and the X6 ///M is even better.
Long live JC - sometimes he's cool, sometimes he's an idiot. But let's face it - who ever made a car buying decision based on a TG review anyway. Having driven an x6 a couple of times, and to buy one, my only gripe is the weight but all of BMWs vehicles seem to be pretty heavy these days. I get the feeling that whenever there's the least little negative news or review on the X6, people come out of the woodwork just to take another swipe at it. People, BMW has put a turbo charged engine in an ///M and they have labeled something other than a normal car an ///M. GET OVER IT! You thought you knew BMW, but here's a little news flash, they changed up on you. IT'S NOT THE CAR'S FAULT! The same people - the same brains - that brought you the award winning M3, the M5 and the M6, have also brought you a 5400 lb X5 M and X6 M. Keep hanging on to that little piece of whatever you think BMW is, but guess what: they never promised you they'd keep making the same cars they made 5, 10, 20 or ____ years ago (just plug in whatever era you got hooked on BMW). Gee, they stuck that little roundel on an X6 and but didn't ask your permission - now what? Last edited by teagueAMX; 01-10-2010 at 04:07 AM.. |

to my surprise JC did love new z4 too!
but indeed x6 is a niche vehicle, esp when he got to test 6 cylinder diesel only. give him a x6m or hybrid on testosterone and see smile on his face . now he will forget weiredness around it lol |

If the X6 is so bad, do you ever wonder why so many people are talking about it instead of a Jetta or Camry?
Jeremy is an entertainer. A good one at that. But he is dumb when it comes to BMW's and the fact BMW got Jeremy to test every one of their cars. He knows BMWs are popular and strive to cut the consumers off at the pass. However, few follow his words of wisdom.

Top gear is great fun!
range rover is a great suv. but for me X6 is the perfect combination of sports and utility. it is great on the snow as well.
just to make it more fun check this out too. Every car can look bad if tested improperly. by the way how is that possbile for x6 to roll back if handbrake was on? ? Last edited by watoowatoo; 01-11-2010 at 11:00 PM.. |

A Niche too far or not far enuf?
When Porsche came out w/the Cayenne people were in an uproar.
A Porsche that looks like a loaf of bread? Blasphemy! Look how many versions of it they have now ! Porsche execs r laughing all the way to the bank ever since. Yes X6 is such a niche vehicle that they've 3 different engines for different markets & now they've added, x6 M & x6 Active Hybrid ! Viva la difference! |

I thought you guys would appreciate the Clarkson Island sketch from Harry and Paul. Since so many seem to be fans of JC.
