That's pretty damn good pricing considering the competition! A core model with the added performance package and technology package would be under $39k. That's far less than the Golf R and I'm sure it will be quite a bit less than the 11th gen Type R.

I wonder how the tuning community will turn out for this engine. I assume the 1.6L 3 cyl is already near its limit with the stock tune. Any words from the Yaris community?

Unfortunately it's been pretty limited. Cracking Toyota (Denso) ECU's is very difficult. There's also not a ton of people willing to forgo their warranty on such a new platform and engine. There are a few standalone ECU options, but they aren't putting down huge numbers (yet). Once the GR Corolla is out, and available in NA, I think there will be a lot more focus on tuning options.

You’ll need to count in Toyota dealer markups which I think will be quite high.

I don't think it's fair to count ADM. MSRP is MSRP, there are definitely dealers who are selling cars at MSRP (mostly if you order and wait). There's dealer markups on Golf R's still and I'll bet there are going to be HUGE dealer markups on the incoming Type R. But yeah, for most people it will be tough getting these without some high ADM unfortunately.

I had my eye on this car before I bought my M2.

The concept of an AWD hot hatch really intrigues me, my old car was a vw golf and in the past ive been involved in the autocross and rallycross scene a bit so the GR Corolla really checks alot of the right boxes for me.

The thing that made me stop loving the car was listening to some youtube videos of the sound that 3cyl engine makes in the yaris. Sounds like a moped had a baby with a 1990 honda civic. Call me picky and you'd be very right, I pretty much immediately lost all passion for the car after hearing that.

Every time i open the throttle on the M2 i am reassured that i made the correct decision.

1, youtube videos/stuff on a recording in no way conveys how exhaust sounds in real life IME.

2, factory exhaust is going to be conservative.

3, exhaust noise is all about the exhaust. It's basically how far the mfr wants to go to make it sound good. One of our regular AutoX competitors has a 718 cayman and it sounds like absolute magic, as in louder than everything else, but good-loud, aggressive, amazing. My subaru with a specific borla sounded like a giant V8. I seriously had people working fast-food drive-throughs look around while I was sitting in front of the window talking to them for the "v8 car making all the rumble". Of course, you could easily turn those into a real bad civic-weedeater sound by going to equal length headers and other mods that would make it sound worse...but back to my point, I'm sure there will be good exhaust options with this car and this is the least of my worries buying a new car.

E.g., SoFla Toyota dealers want 20k ADM for the new Tundra or Sequoia.

I absolutely agree that judging exhaust note based on youtube videos is hard and possibly misleading, but i dont think its coincidence that every M2 on youtube sounds sick and every toyota GR sounds like a weedeater

edit: dont get me wrong, yaris and corolla GR are awesome awesome cars that i would love to see more of across all manufacturers lineups. I love the idea of it. I just dont think 3-cylinders sounds great and im really picky about that. I own a 3 cylinder motorcycle actually and it sounds really really good, but lets keep the 3cyls on the motorbikes.

Pretty sure that's in USD.

I'd expect between 45k-55k

The 400z was the same thing, people thought it would be around 45kish, and in CAD, it was over 50k, and near 70k for the Proto/Performance.

Of course it's in USD, Canadian pricing hasn't been announced.

Agree that making conclusions about sound from Youtube videos is usually not a good idea, but this is an exception from someone who actually knows how to properly mic a car.

The induction noise, BOV, transmission whine and exhaust all combine to make a pretty convincing rally-inspired car noise IMO.

Makes pretty good mechanical noises. Reminds me of when cars like the Evo were around.

Mitsu should have kept the Evo and DSM around and made them a bit more premium. Moving to the 4B11 and away from the 4G63 for a couple of years was poor planning and stupid, IMO. There's still a market for that type of car... clearly.

I think the demand is going to be lower than you think.

A lot of companies don't want to get in trouble with the EPA. For example, Ecutek pointed to the new gen twins "only" selling 8100 cars for the 2022 MY They still haven't cracked the ECU and it's been in customer hands for 10 months now.

Don't expect any new modern car to have their ECU cracked for a while. N55 took years, and so did the B58. And now with the newer 2020+ DME's, you literally have to send it to FEMTO for bench unlock, and the newer 2022+ are not unlockable yet.

Looks like manufacturers are adding tighter security and better encryption.
