Revised X5M Oil Pump
As stated in my new build thread (located in the photo gallery) I'm doing a mid life refresh on my 50k mile X5M.
I wanted to go ahead and provide this section a picture of the latest revision oil pump (on the left). I went ahead and replaced my old one after reading numerous posts on the F10 forums about S63 failures. As some of you know there was a recall on their oil pumps (though only for around 800 cars I believe). Fearing these failures likely extended beyond that range of vehicles and to other platforms such as ours, it was a relatively inexpensive bit of insurance. Note you only have to open up the lower oil pan to replace the pump. I went ahead and had the shop Loctite the bolt that holds the shaft on as well.

The M5 didn't use the same engine as the E70 X5M.
The S63 (X5M) as you state is 11417643256 verified on realoem. With a couple of number changes that may or may not mean different designs. BMW rolls part numbers for a lot of reasons besides design changes. The S63TU in the M5 is 11417845513 But there have been no revisions in part numbers on the M5. There are some visual changes for sure. Maybe a diy guide on replacement? |

I've read of at least one X5M owner who opened up their lower pan to find their oil pump was loose. Not inspecting mine was totally out of the question, may as well replace it while you're in there. As far as a DIY goes I can't help there. I dropped the car off at a good friends shop up in Nashville (German Motorworks) for a slew of mods & MTX related items.

Did your shop replace the timing chain as well...them stretching is a well known issue.

I’m kind of surprised that timing chain failures hasn’t been reported to happen as frequently on the s63 as the n63 even though they are identical designs. Maybe M cherry picked the n63s they used. Maybe better assemblers working on the s63 line?

No. The assemblers on the s63 line won't change the fact that n63 chains stretch. It has to do with maintenance. People who are purchasing vehicles with N63 don't give a rats ass about maintenance, or oil interval. And BMW tells them to change the oil every 20k miles. Realistically, what engine would last if your changing the oil every 20k? People that purchase M cars are usually enthusiasts, and are realistic about when to change the engine oil. Change your oil every 5k, and you will never have to do anything to the engine. They revised the oil pump, because the oil burns, leaks, degrades over time. (Once again maintenance) They probably changed the design, so less engine failures occur for the people out there who listen to BMW in telling them not to maintain their vehicles.
