My front driveshaft failed on my 2012 model year x5 and shaved away some of my transmission. Luckily nothing was damaged except for the trans having a chunk taken out of it.

I called up BMW customer care and they updated me that all E70 models from 2011 through 2013 are apparently covered and now have extended warranty for this issue.
We can take our X5 to the dealership and get it checked/replaced without cost. I was told that the airbags would be ready by Jan 2017 - Takata airbag recall. |

My 2011 3.5i had a failed front DS this past weekend as well. The shaft was hanging off the ground by the time I was able to stop the car and there was a big pool of transmission fluid all over the ground.
Thanks to the DS recall, BMW is replacing the DS, the transmission and underbody panels. It would've been a very spendy repair and I'm glad that BMW is going above and beyond in this case. |

From xoutpost: Looks like recall starts around April 2017. I'll be bringing my 35d in to my local dealership

I have a 2012 x5 35i that the front drive shaft just broke on last Monday . I was lucky that I was pulling into a gas station when it happend. My transmission on the other hand was not so lucky. Heard it break then the rush of fluid hitting the ground. It knocked a big hole in the side of the trans and broke a ear off the transfer that holds the universal. I called the BMW dealer and asked about replacing it. They said it would be around 14,000. Nothing was said about the recall so I towed it to a shop that was close. (Closest BMW is a 1.5 hour away) Started looking online about the problem and found this forum. Thank God! And yall. Called the dealer back and asked about the recall and they told me to bring it in, they would check it out. So after another tow bill i got a call from my SA, before I even made it home, my front drive shaft and transmission will be replaced under the recall. X5 has 96000 miles. Don't understand how they have been replacing parts for years over this recall but they have not made a point to post it on their Web page by inputting the Vin. It very dangeous. Coulnt imagine if i was on the interstate. Only active recall that show'd for my X was the airbags. They told me the air bag recall would be full filed this summer?

Thank God your life! That shaft has been a problem and not sure why BMW keeps replacing that one car after the other. Mine broke and at the time i didn't think about contacting BMW about it. Anyhow, they would take care of it I believe.

If you have receipt they may reimburse you. Because of it being a recall item. Did it do aNY other damage.

Eff that noise... $140 on eBay, remove a shield, four male Torx, and grab a crow bar. How is that $1500? |

The same issue happened to me and my X5 had a broken drive shaft and shattered transmission casing. Thankfully BMW covered the problem under this recall and replaced all broken parts for free.
Now I'm getting an intermittent vibration that violent shakes the front right of the vehicle between 50 - 60 miles/hour. It happens about once every 10 times when I get on the highway. I'm suspecting the issue is due to the front right output shaft. Since this problem never happened before my drive shaft snapped in half, could this incident also break the front output shaft? |

The drive shaft retails for $1200, so it's plausible to get a $1500 bill.

I think you're correct. I found the part number and it is relatively cheap to via the part. The installation procedure probably is more complicated than using a crow bar and may involve dropping the front diff, but $1100 for labor is still way too much.

I was quoted $1500... Propshaft was quoted as $1350. Bought one off of eBay for $180. Paying $140 for install.
I've driven the car a total of three days. This will likely be my first and last BMW. |

Never use he dealer for fixing an issue if you can't do it yourself use an independent mechanic. They will likely treat you better than any dealer. Which looks like you did. Funny though normally I am gluten for punishment as I never buy my cars because of reliability. Just off the emotional response it gives me. |

$1300 in labor to replace the DS is ridiculous. I convinced my dealer to replace mine as a precautionary measure in 2015, and they did it in less than an hour while I was waiting.

Confirmed is harder than 4 bolts and pry bar. Exhaust dropped and lower downpipe dropped to make room, but then it went right in.
Now misfire on cylinder 7 and vacuum leaks have risen to call. Not a fan thus far. I traded in an FX45 for this... It started and drove every day. |
