Easy but not inexpensive! Mine just busted and looking at new parts it's over $500. I'm hoping my extended warranty will cover the dealership fixing it, though.

Add another one 2012 . Did it three times, first went away on it's own without stopping, second went away after a full 5 min+ stop and third went away after a ~3 min stop ( no door opening)
Brought it to the dealer after the first two and they reset computer and transmission. 115 miles later it happened again and they have it now.
No messages or warning lights and the dealer said no codes were thrown.

Looking at one to buy. Was warned limp mode, forgot my scanner at home, CEL is on. Drove it 20k, returned it. Was idling, then somewhat slowly stalled in Park!! Restarted it, ran even smoother than before! Will scan it properly tomorrow, local car.

Reply to Terrifying Moment

I also had an almost exact experience also on the freeway. Only I was driving home from having had my 2013 Z5 35d drive serviced. The Crank Shaft Pulley was replaced as well as 2 belts. Mind you I live 3.5 hours away from the dealership who did the work. I was 30 miles from home and I went to turn on my AC and all hell broke loose. Terrifying none the less. The dealership did take my vehicle back and perform additional services for free but I have lost significant power. If I let off on the accelerator my vehicle used to coast freely, but now there is a significant slowing of my vehicle almost as though there is an engine brake engaging or a limiter. Does anyone know what is causing this? I am reluctant to have any additional work done by the same BMW dealership as I no longer trust their technicians to do the work adequately.

Just had the message, but didn't feel it actually limp. It drove just fine.

I started this 2012, 141K miles X5d, and didn't have time to warm it up. Pulled out of driveway, slowly proceeded around 20mph down the side street, got on the 45mph road, maybe 1/4 throttle, so about 2min into the drive now. The console showed "engine malfunction, power reduced".
I kept driving just fine, but the drive didn't require going over 50mph, I didn't feel any loss of power.

I had new FRM installed under warrantee at the dealer a few days back. They "reprogrammed the whole car overnight". Since then, I took it for an hour to the mountains, no problems.

I've never seen this message before. And no Check Engine popped up. Hopefully a fluke.

Careful reading your codes, FRM dies if you don't plug the car into a battery charger while reading the codes. Luckily, FRM is now warranted to 15Y 180K miles!
