My E550 was an absolute rocket....but it was naturally aspirated, not twin turbo. Plus, the X5 simply looks and handles better IMO. |

Curious, the two BMW X5's I drove had a rattle coming from the trunk. Is this a common issue on these cars? The dealer said that they move things around in the back and it is just a matter of adjusting things. I found it interesting that both cars had the same rattle.

I can't comment on the 50 since I don't own one and didn't really look into it.
I will say that the only time you ever see the self-leveling suspension in a 35 is if it's got the 3rd row seats. Now, what I don't know is if an M Sport 35 w/ the 3rd row gets that suspension or not, my gut tells me yes, but then what happens to the sport suspension? Easiest way to find out would be to decode a VIN w/ the 3rd row. |

For a vehicle with 3rd row and sport suspension, it keeps the sport suspension, just gets the self leveling airbags in the back. The X5///M has sport suspension with adaptive drive, but has the self leveling airbags... Ironically, no 3rd row available in the M.
As for the rattle, I've done some reading and everything I've seen says that its the latch assembly for the rear hatch. I think part of it is the fact that its a two piece tailgate, so neither side of the latch are firmly attached to the body. If it were a standard style hatch (for example, the X3) then the bottom side of the latch would be bolted directly to the body, and there'd be no rattling. In the 2 yrs/15K miles I owned the 2012 X3, it had ZERO rattles... I've read of some guys making adjustments and stuff to stop the rattle. I'm considering removing the latch bar and wrapping it in electrical shrink wrap. Of course, over time it'd get cut from the latch and eventually it'd rattle again...

Here's the Sport Activity Package description from a 2013 50i (you can tell it's newer due to the paddles being included) from a vehicle for sale on BMWUSA.com. Not sure what is meant by 'Sport Suspension Delete' or 'Sport Package' (kinda vague?) - Sport Activity Package Sport Suspension Delete Wheels: 19" x 9.0" Light Alloy Y-Spoke Sports Leather Steering Wheel w/Shift Paddles Sport Package Sport Seats Shadowline Exterior Trim Anthracite Headliner Tires: P255/50R19 Run-Flat AS Here's what I see for a 2013 M Sport - other than mention of the self leveling suspension there is nothing about improved/upgraded suspension components, unless it's something included with 'M Sport Package w/ZMP' and it just doesn't say? Attached is the procedure for adjusting the tailgate. After adjustment, use some clear silicone grease on the bump stops.

Funny.....I've been noting this rattle myself. Seems to come from the rear left of the truck on occasion...it doesn't happen over bumps every time and is very hard to reproduce. I'll give this a shot!

I think you might be referring to the M Performance Package, which 1st required the M Sport package. Offered only in 2013 - more power, aluminum pedals, and black exhaust tips.

IMO, these seats are supremely uncomfortable ... after about 2 hrs driving. The horizontal part of the seat is rock hard. I believe foam is denser. The lumbar is fine.
Also check out side bolster ... it's pretty high. I'm 6'3" and have a hard time clearing it .... it almost changed my voice! Last edited by PAX5; 01-21-2015 at 08:19 AM.. |

I'm curious what PAX5 has to say too…all comfort seats add is adjustable side bolstering which wouldn't seem to fix what he pointed out?
I think the Sport seats would be fine but comfort seats are definitely are an upgrade. The non-sport seats….bleh, like sitting on a wooden bench at the local park. |

My wife and I are going to look at some CPO '12 35's this weekend with around 30k on the clock. Saw some 50's that we really liked but the service bulletin scared us off a bit. M-Sports and even Sport Activity are really hard to find around here, will probably be looking at Premiums. Kind of a bummer but not a deal breaker since it's the wife's car.

It's not just the adjustability (20-way btw!), I think that the seat foam density is different. And the side bolstering is lower/flatter towards the front - see pics. Ultimately you would have to sit and experience it, of course ... I traded my '11 50i with sport seats for a '12 50i with Adaptive Drive and Comfort seats ... Call me crazy. Only had the '11 for 7 months and made the trade ... couldn't be happier (except for the $%#*! N63 campaign).

I found a car that I really like! About to purchase if everything checks out during CPO checklist.
A few quick questions: 1. One of the previous past services done on this car is "leak at gearbox input (converter bell housing), automatic transmission leaking." How serious is this? The car is still under warranty, but don't want to be at the dealership fixing the car all the time. 2. For M sport package and 20" M Wheels Style 333, is there a recommended tire choice? I ask because as part of the CPO certification they have to replace all 4 tires. I recall that for the 335i they had a few run flat tire options (Michelin being a little nicer than Bridgestone). I wouldn't want the tire selection to negatively affect the comfort of the ride.

There are many many many threads out there on tires. However, unless something has recently changed, to CPO the car they have to put OE tires on it, which means Bridgestones or Dunlops. You'll probably have to get Bridgestones unless you can swing something with the dealer where you get the car and then immediately sell them back the Duelers in exchange for something else, or they just agree to wink wink nudge nudge and CPO it with the tire of your choice. There aren't too many tire options out there for these wheels. I would avoid the Toyo Proxes 4 Plus, I had them on my M5 very briefly and they were horrible. Once my Duelers go I'll be switching to DWS' and getting a compact spare. PSS' are always a popular option as well. |
