Before our E70 we had two 3 series and they were silent compared to the X5 and the ride on the 3's was so much better. |

2011 e70 X5 35d
(one week ownership 40k miles) Just went to BMW since my wife got a engine light. (she said a water faucet. lol) The Diesel preheat module was giving the error code. Light is out now but will probably come back. BMW ordered the part what will be replaced next week. The service guy told me that it will take a full day since the job includes removing valve cover and "digging even lower". I asked the service guy if that is a common X5 problem. He said that is the first time they have seen that issue. |

On mine I've started noticing what look like carbon laced water spots below the exhaust tips.

Thanks for the info. Might not that common in Florida or the service guy told me BS. Just went to the car to get the document. "Preheating control unit" looked on realoem for the part number: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...=12&fg=15&hl=5 However the car is starting normal. Probably because Florida has normal temperatures in the winter time. |

...regarding the oil level...they had a puma case open, and came to the conclusion that this engine is supposed to have 9L of oil instead of 8L. Not sure why the recommended # of litres would change. They filled it to 9L and said bring it back if it gets low in the next 2-3 months. |

To answer the original question..none, zero defects.
My 22 month old 3D SE has done just a shade over 17k miles and has only just had its Oil Service. It's used one pair of front tyres, the rears should last until I trade it in in April for a nice new 3D MSport in Carbon Black Only negative is having to re-set the tracking every 9 months or so. Other than that it's my favourite BMW. PS I get >34 MPG |

From my limited research, it seems like the diesels suffer from frequent check engine lights related to various sensors. The EGR valve seems to be another common issue. Are these concerns pretty accurate? Really want an X5D, but not sure if I want to deal with these problems.

On my second X5. The first being a 2011 and this one a 2013. Other than the 2011 scheduling an appointment for service once (curious if anyone else had this experience) that no one at the dealer could explain what it was that they did or why the car needed servicing the experience was trouble free. And I've had this one since August with no issues whatsoever.

my dealer actually had an 2013 X5M with only 11k on it, was gonna jump on the price, except the steering is still too stiff for my wife, this will be more of a family car, so it was more for her.

OK I don't think you are allowed to put brake items on a list of "Issues" for a 2009 vehicle !!

'11 X5M and have had the car for about 8 months now.
Repaired: Vacuum leaks (CCV lines, passenger and drivers side) Coolant leak (turbo cooling line) Tailgate "clunking" (keeps reoccurring though...) Still have: Oil Leak(s) Undetermined throttle/transmission issues CREAKY PLASTIC (my biggest pet peeve of the car) It's embarrassing how creaky the interior plastic is on this car considering its age and price tag. Almost ready to start replacing the panels one by one. |

All the vacuum leaks issues, and my '92 Toyota pickup, honestly, still it's original vacuum lines all over the intake manifold, and all still don't leak. Hell, even the original a/c compressor still works, and it was switched over to 134a. You guys are making my decision to only buy again with a warranty even easier.

If I had to buy again a warranty would be a no brainer. Unfortunately I took my chances on this one. Lesson learned. |

You find on average the German car companies force technology into cars before their vetted out sometimes and you get issues, the Japanese car companies tend to be very basic but very sturdy. Less things to go wrong. German cars tend to be over complicated and over engineered for ultimate efficiency and bragging rights. Remember how many engine awards do you see Toyota getting? They never really innovate they just make an old design better. Their v6 and such have been around for ever, just new reworked versions of the same design but made better. BMW and a few others have won awards on their engines by a big margin because they create new and interesting designs to solve problems they start with a blank sheet of paper but unfortunately the customers get to vet out the kinks. If BMW took Toyotas approach they would take some of their great reliable engines and instead of coming out with a new engine every 5 to 8 years they would perfect what they have and you'd have almost no warranty. But every time you come up with something new from the ground up you'll have failures. Don't much care for Toyotas in general as their just appliances to me and lack soul. |
