UPDATE! Removing iphone snap-in craddle
UPDATE:
For future iPhone cradle removers, PLEASE do not attempt what is described in the first page of this thread, or cut wires ... - the post from AwB here nails it. Here is another guy who posted the same on Xoutpost which is what I followed. ~15 mins, no cutting, no error codes, no kidding! http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-cradle-5.html ================================================ I want more storage space in my center arm rest. How do I remove the snap-in phone craddle? It is hard-wired and I believe that once it is disconnected, it will cause error/fault codes. Anybody have experience with this?

I am ... the craddle is already obsolete, and it is taking up valuable storage space. Just need to know if disconnecting the wiring harness will cause faults, because I don't want to pay for coding ... what a stupid gadget!
Stay tuned ...

Mine is out. I will swap center consoles with anyone on here. I would like it.

What exactly do you mean ...? What is out and (did you do it yourself? How?) what do you want to swap? Can you show pictures?

I have mine about halfway out, figured out how to get the cradle off and now it's dangling by the cable, can't figure out what's next. The X3 forum has a couple good articles but the housing doesn't look to be the same in the X5. Determined to get this thing out!

My 2009 came without item 13 in the diagram above. Dealer took it out I suppose. I can swap the center console and arm rest or item #1 in the diagram above..

I got mine out. Cut and capped the wires. Bluetooth/phone will not link up but that's it. No codes or any other faults. I assume phone won't sync with bluetooth because of that but not positive. I always use a bluetooth earpiece anyway so doesn't bother me. Love the added glove box space now.

I'm going to look into this, when I get some time, as I am finding that wasted space, taken up by this useless phone adapter, so annoying. |

I would agree...not the best option. Not because I would use it (bluetooth) but I just like everything working. I had the cradle out and was hoping to find a canon plug or connection but no luck. Brian5 , if you find any good info on cradle removal let me know. That being said the storage compartment is so much nicer with the cradle gone.

I can confirm you can remove the cradle without removing the center console or loosing any functionality. Takes about 15 min. Remove the two screws under the cradle, then start taking apart the cradle until your left with just the circuit board and end wires. Wrap up with zip lock bag and tuck back into the hole. Order the the blank plate from the dealer and snap it in. I followed the instructions I found on the x3 forum. Same idea...

OK, decided to take mine out now. Took 20 minutes. Two pics attached. Will give more details later -- am selling our house right now...
All the scratches etc. on the "before" pic are from when I "modified" the iPhone 3G adapter to work with an iPhone 4 (that's a long time ago now). The "after" pic still has some cable that I need to hide (at the front). |
