M Steering Wheel Retrofit - Possible?
Hi all
Is is possible to retrofit the M Steering wheel found in the X6M to a standard X6 or the M Sport wheel from the X5 perhaps? I notice the M wheel has the new style paddles, one up and one down, will they work on a 2009 X6 which has up and down paddles both sides? I've been told its not possible to fit a heated one to a none heated car but if the M wheel isn't heated will it swap over using the standard airbag? Sellers online suggest it can be done? Thanks Carl |

Go with the original M wheel from the x6 m package. It is by far the safest bet. 5.0 owners had no issues with an x6m wheel, however some on this forum had issues with a 3.5model. You can officially now get the M wheel for the x6. X5 one does not fit. Am sure there will be people who think otherwise but i think it is safe to go with the m wheel(without colour m stiching) for the x6 (available only as of a year ago or so).i will sell my car soon but would otherwise install it as well.

I had the heated M Steering wheel retrofitted to my 2010 X6 35i. My car didn't come with the original heated steering wheel, so after the retrofit, the heated function do not work. And one more thing, the buttons assignment on the new steering wheel doesn't match the function. The M button is now the "mode", so you have to get used to it. Otherwise, everything works, even the Paddles works, one for up, one for down.

If i use the core wheel and transfer the buttons etc from my car will that work? I cant seen to find the M wheel for the X6 here in the UK.
I also have BMW warranty so cant risk buttons being different etc incase the dealer finds out and voids my warranty. I was hoping the core wheel can fit and all buttons and airbag swap over from my current X6? |

I did explore that option with my garage, and the simple answer is no, according to them. The buttons and the pedals share the same wiring harness, so if you take out the buttons panel from the original wheel, you won't be able to enjoy the left up, right down paddle shifting.
I bought my M wheel on eBay, try searching there, and you may have some surprise in price. Quote:

Excellent, thank you for that. I'd looked on realoem using my chassis no and it didn't list an M wheel, only the alcantara one from the performance range.
If I can find out the details of that item maybe I can find one on eBay etc for a better price |
