Those dreaded Run Flat Dunlops and 5.0i/3.5i/35d comparison
HI All
I have a 5.0 twin turbo v8 X6 with dunlop RFT. I know that this has been covered previously, but I have lost the thread. I really want to change to softer non run flats but there seems to be limited availibilty for 21" wheels. Does anybody know of another type of tyre I can fit to the car ??? Also , does anyone know if i fit a 315 tyre to the rear instead of a 325 , will it have any detremental affect . Conversly, if I fit a a 295 instead of a 285 to the front ?? On a seperate note, I have had 2 x6s before, the 35i and the 35d and all inc the current 5.0i had the adaptive drive. The 5.0 is a beast , most people seem to think it has the same non turbo engine as the x5 4.8. It actually has the 4.4 twin turbo unit in it. You dont need to bother getting louder exhausts , my 2011 sounds very very throaty and if you use the manual verison of the auto gearbox, you can hear the cars turbos popping and banging as it changes gear when you give it some welly. The new 8 speed box seems to drop it in the power band on every change and it is a very very quick car, (wolf in sheeps clothing). Dont bother buying the diesel, you will not get anywhere near the mpgs they state and it is nowhere near as smooth as the 5.0, ( diesel rat rat rattle !) No matter how i tried , I only ever got 27mpg, whereas my v8 twin turbo gets 22mpg no matter how i drive it and in GB petrol is cheaper than diesel !! Hope you can help with the tyre question |

there's quite a bit of wiggle-room in fitting a tire to a rim width. the tire side-walls either bulge or stretch a little, so they may LOOK a little different (i personally like square-shouldered tires, and i really don't care for the "stretched" look) but it PROBABLY won't be a safety issue if you're only going 1cm up or down in size. each tire has a range of recommended wheel widths specified by the factory, make sure you ASK YOUR INSTALLER what fits. |

I have a 40d and routinely get over 30mpg even with some enthusiastic driving. The torque range is incredible and it is the smoothest car I have ever driven. As far as rattles are concerned I have not experienced this at all in this car. By contrast, my previous X6, a 35i, rattled constantly! Luck of the draw I suspect. |

Because the car is all wheel drive you need to make sure that whatever tires you switch to that the front and rear are with in 2% of each other as far as rotational diameter is concerned.

Twice have have gotten 27mpg (calculated, not computer) on my 35i, but it was only on a 100 mile stretch, at night, no AC, on cruise, at 70mph [I'd like to say downhill with the wind at my back, but I don't know]. The same 100 mile stretch during the day (lots of other cars around, so lots of driving game going on), and 100 deg outside (lots of AC), I get about 20-23mpg. A whole tank around town? 14-16mpg. I'm an aggressive driver and have 19" wheels. |
