Funny comment from BMW finance advisor

We bought a new x5d last month. The finance advisor asked if we wanted the wheel tire insurance. She advised this due to the cost of replacing the RFT. We told her that the RFT are going to be takin off right away anyway. She warned us that the suspension would need to be changed/modified to accommodate. And that before we take off the rft we should have the service department make the necessary adjustments.

What kind of a load of crap is that? Anyone hear something like this from your BMW dealer?

It's so sad when folks no nothing about the product they sell. But then again, she was the finance advisor. I'm surprised she didn't say you would void your warranty by switching out the tires!

Actually, she is partially right. The suspension is tuned with an RFT in mind so technically if you put a non-RFT in there you would need a suspension adjustment to achieve the same results. In reality, the difference is barely perceptible and you can safely replace your RFT for your favorite non-RFT and you'll be fine. Many people have done that (including myself) and we live happily.

So what exactly would they do to the suspension to adapt it to normal tires? I'm not buying it.

Agreed. OP You should play them at their own game and go back in there and say yea I'm here for my "suspension adjustment" ... And see what they say.

Hahaha.

They'd change the suspension to some painful hard crashy setup to put back that feeling the run flats give you..

Dont buy that either, all I know is that RFTs are heavier than regular tires, that shouldnt have any effect on the suspension. They are similar to width, height etc to all regular tires, dimension wise so .....

I think you failed to detect the sarcasm in my post regarding run flats :-)

Having said that, they're no where near as bad on the x5 as they were on my 335d coupe

I agree that on the 335 the RFTs were dreadful. My x5d on RFTs are nowhere near as bad. I may just stay with them since I have the third row and no place for the spare.

Actually, shouldnt she have told you that the warranty will cover whatever wheels and tires you put on the car? If I recall correctly when I bought that in 07 it did.
