Hey all X5 owners. I was thinking of getting my X5 wheels powder coated or painted after I got it but honestly when I get rid of this thing in a few years I'm not sure if it will change the selling price. So I decided to try the Plasti Dip. I've had it on for 5 months in Arizona heat and its still looking good. Thought I'd share for those thinking about it. I like it as its reversible, easy to apply and most of all inexpensive. Thoughts?
Here are some pics that didn't load last time Last edited by Kristalov; 09-05-2012 at 11:14 PM.. |

Have you had to spray patches for rock chips if any? How hard do you scrub when you wash it?

That looks nice. How much spray did you have to get for the four wheels and what was the cost?

Did you spray the plasti-dip onto the face of the rims with the tires on?

Yes. Just covered the brakes and removed the center caps and valve stem caps. The excess peels off the rubber on the tire. Its really just too easy not to try.

A few more pics of the process: 1. showing the prep work. 2. showing the first two coats and 3.How to take it off when your ready for a change. The more coats the thicker it becomes (I applied 5 coats), the better it holds up and also the easier it comes off.

Thanks for the helpful info and pics, I'm definitely going to be doing the same to my winter wheels. Also, did you use the Gun metal or black Plasti-dip?

you can do it with the wheels right on the car. I'm sure we all did it that way. you just clean the wheels and let them dry completely (use a leaf blower or air compressor to speed up the drying and get it out of any small spaces, cover the brake disc and caliper with a kitchen size garbage bag and spray. then roll the car forward til the bottom of the wheel is at the top and spray all the spots missed from the past position. usually 3 cans is more than enough to do them.
You can peel the plasti dip center cap off after you spray them or you can pop the center cap out before hand. I sprayed over mine and left it. like the way that looks better since blue and white look wierd in the middle of a black rim. |
