Rear defogger problem - maybe

I have a new 2008 335i cab and I noticed that the top 3 horizontal lines of the rear window defogger do not appear to work. When I turn on the defogger the window clears up to a point approximately 3 inches (or 3 lines) from the top.
Has anyone else seen this happen?

I have the same problem but on a sedan.
I don't think it's normal.
I don't know what to do...

What means radio aerial uses top elements?
Is it the same thing on a sedan?!

The top few lines on your rear windshield is the antenna for your radio. These will not warm up like the defogger heating elements, so what you're experiencing is perfectly normal. Nothing to worry about.

The shark fin houses the antennas for the satellite radio and for the GPS navigation. Go here for details (or feel free to pop open the shark fin if you want a more hands on approach ).

May be that it does. However dealers usually say that every problem is normal or to spec.

It's on the U.S. spec cars because apparently, all us Americans have some underlying wish to be a shark. In Europe, you can actually opt for the shark fin delete if you don't have navigation or satellite radio, but BMW in all their infinite wisdom decided this was not possible for the U.S.

And for those without that either?
As far as I know it's standard fitment regardless of options. If this thread is right mine serves no use at all.

It functions as a vertical stabilizer at higher speeds.

Economies of scale make it cheaper to install on every vehicle regardless of equipment. The cost of the shark fin and ancillary wiring is less than the logistical costs of yes/no.

Blanks in the bumpers for sensors or in the dash for switches I can see but a piece like the fin seems just too big and costly for that.

The number of cars ordered with BMW Assist in the USA is large enough to offset the cost of setting up a separate production run to build cars without the hole in the roof for those that do not need satellite/gps or cell phone integration. Remember that cars with BMW Assist have their own GPS and cell phone equipment.
