Spied: X5 ///M Pictures Up Close and Personal

Currently sitting atop BMW’s X5 range is the 4.8is but if these latest spy shots are anything to go by there may be a new top dog in the X5 lineup and this one could get an ‘M’ badge. A performance SUV doesn’t really fit in with the M philosophy of increased performance through reduced weight but the allure of the two-ton sports market could be too strong even for BMW and its famed M division to resist.

After witnessing Porsche and AMG rack up thousands of sales with their respective Cayenne and ML models, BMW is now primed to launch its own high-performance version of the X5 SUV. We now have images of a prototype version of such a car being offloaded from a truck in Germany.

The test-mule was sporting a pair of quad exhaust pipes, which suggest it’s a new high-displacement model. Other details revealing there’s a new powertrain being developed included a funny warning message spotted inside the car to remind drivers that running the engine for longer than 30 minutes will cause it to go ‘kaput’.

There are two schools of thought on which engine will power the new car. Some suggest the 5.0L V10 from the M5 could make its way into the X5 but officials have previously stated that engine would be reserved for the M5 and M6 only. The alternative is a new twin-turbo 4.4L petrol V8 engine currently in development with a rumored output of around 430hp (331kW) and 600Nm of torque.

Did the little note at the bottom picture....the last line....
"MOTOR Kaputt"......I went to online dictionary and the word "Kaputt" means "broken"???
And the first work "pumpe" means "pump"...and I assume "fuel pump" issue???

The note says: switch on pump for engine and after a longer drive leave it on for 30 minutes and only after that switch it off, otherwise engine will be broken!

This pretty much means that this is a turbo charged engine, indeed!

Turbocharged!!! The HUGE cutouts in the front bumper are a dead giveaway. Think Porsche Cayenne turbo!! This thing probably is going to have oilcoolers the size of the 335 intercooler. Absolutely nuts.

well if they are testing the 4.4i TT that is going to be available in X6, then its no match for a cayenne turbo

it ll be 404hp s where the cayenne turbo is 500

BMW will not disappoint, especially if it is targeting the Cayenne Turbo. I doubt they will under power the vehicle.

Remember that the E92 M3 is under powered compared to the C63 and the RS4 but it is considered more sporty and considered a better car overall even though it lacks the HP's

Do you guys think that maybe its not an //M but just the new XDrive5.0i engine thats being substituted in for a facelift in late '09 or early '10?

it's not an M for sure, i think it might only be a mod, the front bumper seemed really weird to me, and i can see the stock exaust holes on the rear bumper...
