I'm torn: 335i or E92 M3
Yeah, I know most of you are probably thinking, WTF. But hear me out.
Went to the dealer today to get an appraisal on my car and check out some cars. I've been eying the new M3 since the pics were released, and the thought of a V8 is awesome. The rep we were talking to has a 335i sedan lowered on tein coilovers, has exhaust and software. He says its putting out somewhere in the neighborhood of 380hp @ the wheels; it's pretty badass. He took us on a ride and let me drive back to the dealership. That car pulled harder in 4th gear w/ 4 ppl in the car at 2500rpm than my car does at 5000rpm with just me in the car. It was unreal. Now, here's the delima: I could have the 335 as soon as it gets built. I could get new suspension, exhaust, and software and have a very very quick car in all aspects. OR, I could wait for a year, if not longer, for the new M3. I put my name down on the list to order one, but there are 30 ppl above of me. Pro's for the M3: It's an M, comes with great suspension, CF roof..awesome, V8. Cons: 279lb-ft torque in a V8?!! WTF. 10-15k more, and I'll have to wait forever. Opinions? |

i soundly hear your pro 335i reasons, but if you for some reason see the difference in price as negligible, get the M3.

Is that M Badge really important to you?
I think for the meantime the 335i coupe will serve you well, it has the best bang for the buck. Unless, you really can afford the new M3, I go with the 335i first. Wait until, the second year release of the /M and for price to stablized. Quote:

Here's what I would do if I could lease. (I can't because I drive 22k miles a year)
Lease the 335 for 2 years. Purchase a used M3 from people that can't afford the payments and get the M for a fraction of the ridiculously marked up price.

Get the M3. You'll have all the HP and performance advantages over the 335i without the bother of aftermarket expense, time and parts and you're covered under full warranty. Plus it's an M for cryin out loud ... aside from a few shared body parts it's a totally different car than the 335i

+1 exactly what I would suggest, but I see that money is not the issue for you, so you might just get a M3 new as soon as your lease is over without having to take over someones payments

The M3 actually produces 295 torque with a flat torque distribution so it should be very comparable to the 335i. Is the fixed up 335i sedan used? I for one would not buy a car with modified suspension and engine. I would go for the M if I had the money, you won't regret it!

Unless you do track events and/or really care to wait about a year's time to pick one up, just go with the 335i. You're basically getting the new M3 in the 335i package. You have race suspension, and the 380HP pushes out something over 400ft lbs. of torque. I can put money on it that the 335i will beat a new M3 in a straight run (maybe even on a track). They're seeing 0-60mph times in 4.3s, which is faster the M3's claimed 4.8s. Worst case they're almost neck in neck. Maybe once you start getting in the low-mid tripple digit speeds you'll see a diffence, but when are you ever going to do that?
The thing is, the M3 has that extra added performance-orientated design in its entire design from the engine to the suspension to the body's material design. It's a true performance car. But you're going to pay out the ass for it. |

The M3 is going to be more than $10 - $15k than a 335 imo. The popularity and exclusivity of owning the first one (one of the first ones) is going to drive the cost up. I remember when the e46 m3's came out. People were paying $80k for them just to be the first one to have it.

If you really are torn, lease for 24 months the 335i and put your name on the waiting list for the M3. Then you can sample the 335i and see if you really still want or need the M3. BTW, I believe that the 335i with Procede is going to be a better daily driver. But the M3 will be HOT and better on the track. it all depends on what you want.

If I get a 335, it'll be new. I've thought about getting the 335 and driving it for about 4 years and then getting the M. The one I drove today had 350+ hp/tq @ the wheels. It's that low end torque thats making me even consider not getting the M. Granted, they've both got low end torque, but the 335 has soo much more potential.
If I did get the 335, it would have coilovers, exhaust, and software immediately. And I do a lot of autox, so it would be worth it. Also, if I get the M, it will be 2nd model year production. First run comes out in sept, and bc I'm so far down on the list to order one, it wouldn't be until late summer of next year before I could order it. |

M3 = beefier drivetrain, 8 throttle bodies (one for each cylinder), new V8 power unit one of the lightest eight-cylinders in the world, lighter than the straight-six power unit in the former model, top engine speed of 8300 rpm (wtf?). Each of the 8 cylinders will displace 500 cc.
The new M3 is not just about owning that special letter designation. But so much for the tech details. Watch this: [u2b]v/SQ74JX7EsSM[/u2b] |

Lease a 335i while you waiting for your M3 to be built. It will be a long wait and most likely the dealers will marking them up big time.

By the way, screw the rep...he just wants to get paid, and he'll see your commission a hell of a lot sooner on a 335i. Nevertheless, I respect, however lowly, how clever he is to whip you around in a modded 335. And I'm sure he won't have a problem unloading any M3s that unload at the 'ship.
