how to handle this situation?
So I had a problem with my aux fan running high a few minutes after startup...engine cold, ac off. Brought to my indie and he said the fan was going bad. 800 bucks to replace. done.
So i have had the car back for a couple weeks and it is still doing it. It is quieter bc it is a new fan, however, it still engages to high a couple minutes after startup. I ordered a peake code reader. 1 code as follows- 2E82=electric coolant pump-shut down. Sounds like coolant pump is going? If this is the case and I need a new coolant pump, how do I handle the misdiagnosis by indie? I mean, obviously, he didnt even check to see if there were any codes and apparently the fan was not the source of the problem. thanks |

I think the best way is take your car back to the dealer and let them check for you.

I think you should take it back to the indy shop that did the work on it and bitch because clearly the fan was not your issue and the water pump is....

I agree, I am waiting for him to call back. But what is fair to expect after a misdiagnosis? I know the fan doesn't cost nearly as much as the msrp he charged me...should i request the difference? |

And herin lies the inherent problems with indy shops.
There is nothing to stop them from saying - "new problem, that'll be $2k please." While the same is obviously possible at the dealer's, you do have a bit more recourse - the GM, BMWNA and so forth. That is why it is imperative to find a good indy that you trust implicitly - not an easy thing to do. |

if you can pull the date/time it was logged, you might be able to show the problem existed before you visited the indie.
dealer would charge diag fee to do this, which might not make it worth it. |

The water pump/ fan cooling ..speeds ect..are all electronic controlled..and I believe may require some programming ..
I think i would bite the bullet on this one and take it to the dealer..water cooling like oil.. is not something to fool with. |

No programming needed for water pump / thermostat change to the best of my knowledge. However, there is a bleeding procedure that you need to do, and it is a bit of a pain to change yourself. You can find the bleeding procedure here in DIY by ENINTY if you decide to tackle it yourself.

I'd be weary of this Indy shop anyway. A good shop should have a scan tool for BMWs and should have tested the fan first. The fan speed is controlled by the ECU and not the fan unit, so thinking the over-speed condition was a fault of the fan is not the proper diagnosis and could of been checked with a scan tool anyway. (A bad temperature sensor would have been a bettery first guess if the line of thinking was the fan was running fast all the time, not the fan itself.) The Indy when checking the fan should have scanned for trouble codes and would have found the water pump code and discovered the problem. The Indy my fix BMW's but probably is not experienced on anything past an E36... |

when i replaced my water pump i used new coolant. though, if the old coolant was drained into a clean container and filtered, i don't see an issue re-using it...
