They are fine with snow tires. Blizzaks or Wintersports are most acclaimed.

Not so good in the mountains even with snow tires and a lsd.
Probably fine in NY with snow tires. Get a set of used 17" wheels, or cheap wheels, and mount a set of dedicated snow tires.

For NY you need snow tires, not just for snow but also for the cold temps.
Take your time and take it easy on the throttle and you will be just fine.

Have an e92 335i in the Canadian snow belt, with Blizaks, it works better than a FWD car!

I've taken my e90 335i with Wintersports skiing to Vermont and the Catskills several times. Only got stuck in the snow once, and that was in 8-10 inches of fresh powder. Definately took my time driving though.

18" Snows and it drives like a truck with 225 series Dunlop Wintersport 3D tires.

I went through 10" of snow with now LSD...

Would someone please recommend some decent (but cheap) wheels for dedicated snow tires? Exact part number from a vendor would be nice.

I've also got a 335i which will need snow tires before this November.

My uncle runs Borbets on his E90 330, but any cheap wheel should be fine as long as it clears the brakes, like ASA too perhaps.

TireRack's a super vendor, esp if you're in the US. I run 17x8 Rials with Blizzak LMs from TireRack. They're competent in the winter stuff, but still suck on hills relative to FWD and AWD with fresh snow, slush or ice on the ground. With an SUV as the second family car and no daily commutes we get by.

FWIW in low grip conditions like snow sometimes it's best to turn off DSC/DTC, sometimes wheelspin is necessary to start going or keep momentum on hills

I use my 335xi as my winter car. I've got a set of Blizzaks and rims purchased from Tire Rack. They came mounted and balanced with TPS installed. The rims were closeouts and only cost $60 each. I drove through 6-8" of fresh snow without any problem. I did have to leave it home when the 20" snowfalls occurred (3 x's)

I drove my 335d through the record snowfalls this past winter without incident. I think that was partly due to the Continental DWS tires I have mounted, but the RWD is still more than capable of traversing through some serious winter conditions. In my experience, the ground clearance is more a limiting factor than the RWD.

put a spare wheel in the trunk in winter if you dont need the space. extra pounds will be useful and add traction a bit. You talking 50-60lbs extra weight over rear wheels. nice.

I've never owned a FWD car, except for my last car (2010 Mazda3) which was awesome to drive, but I still feel waaaay more comfortable with a 50/50 weight balanced RWD car and snow tires.

With DSC, even an average driver can drive these cars well in the snow as long as s\he has a set of decent snow tires.

your best answer comes from your own experience, how do you get around in your typical snowy day, doing typical route/commute.
Everyone experiences are all different, if you ask someone from Seattle like myself, driving in the snow around 32 degree, up/down steep hill would be different than midwest where temp dip to teen and flat geographic.

If eskimo can have many words for snow flakes I can only imagine that many different driving condition in the snow.
If you have to drive in the snow only AWD with snow tires will get you around safely, else we need to take car mfg that makes AWD as fraud.

I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. Terrain here is a mixture of flat and hilly. Winters are rather unpredictable but we generally get a few large snowfalls and temps can get down to single digits. I'm considering either RWD with snow tires. or AWD with all-season. (Also keep in mind I live in a condo and don't have a garage to store tires. I'd have to keep them at a friends so that also factors into my decision.)

Are you single? I can think of many "furniture" related uses for spare wheels/tires, but a wife probably wouldn't go for any of them haha

For example:
-stack all 4 in the corner and put a plant on top
-arrange in a square or rectangle + piece of wood = coffee table
