iDrive 8: Stream/Watch Movie files
Hi ,
I know that this is not recommended etc etc, but still wanting to find out what options are available (and to do so responsibly of course) is there anyway for us (with a 3rd party install, or hack , obviously) , to watch and/or stream movie (or YouTube) on the new G87 iDrive screen ? coming from a C63s with a TV Tuner, I've usually have the news playing or digital tv playing... and it may be something I will miss when I move over to the new M2 when I pick it up later this month. Being new to BMW - what options are there aftermarket to do this ? |

You do this while driving? Dude, buy a big screen TV and spend some time at home if you want to watch TV or movies.

I don't know of any aftermarket options like that.
Honestly, for cost? Why not buy a cheap chromebook or tablet, keep it in the car. You'll get a better AV experience for less money. |

This is all you need -- don't pay that price though.

cool thanks! but this doesn't support the G87 M2 ? so basically this is a wireless CarPlay option (which is already standard in the G87 M2) , but it allows streaming of YouTube on the idrive8 ? |

Best way: buy an Android Phone that supports the OS version (Android OS 13, I believe, don't quote me) to install the app that enables video streaming (like YouTube) over wireless Android Auto. Might be the cheapest/easiest option without touching the car's electronics.

that's a great idea - maybe just a cheap android phone , but I will need an active SIM card for this to work. Last edited by rogueGTI; 11-21-2023 at 10:59 PM.. |

Otherwise, you can also download videos to the phone beforehand. |

I've been trying to figure out how someone with an iPhone can make this work and everything seems a bit clunky.
A cheap Android phone would work, but you would want it to have data. The features of Android auto (or Carplay for that matter) aside from being able to stream videos are really nice so you wouldn't want to lose out on them. Making phone calls and stuff like that wouldn't really work if you only have data on the Android. As much as I hate to say it, right now it seems like the best solution is to switch sides lol |

This may work, but you'd still lose out on your phone calls while you were in Android Auto until you manually toggled back to Carplay. May be a decent compromise but still not ideal.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think you can run Android Auto and Car play concurrently despite being able to have multiple phones connected. So while youre playing a video with Android Auto and someone calls your iPhone, you won't be able to answer from the car.
Still might be a decent compromise but a bit clunky |
