iDrive 8.5 coming for '24 M2 and all models SOP 7/23

I checked in with Horiatu after reading his story on iD8.5 updates. He was able to confirm with his source that the ‘24 M2 will get the HU5.

To quote, “The Headunit High 5 was released on the G70 in 2022. All new BMW’s produced starting from July 2023 will receive operating system 8.5 and be equipped with HU-H5. So yes the new M2 2024 will receive HU-H5 and 8.5M operating system.

Haha Yes, getting old, so Z8F for me. This is why I'm waiting for the M2 CS”.

Here’s his original story:

Cheers for that. Interesting. I was lead to believe from most other threads on Bimmerpost I had read that the G42/G87 weren't getting HU-H5 and thus iDrive 8.5.

I'm keen to know if there is any more intel backing up this comment from Horiatu as I have an G42 going into build end of this month. Not that much of a concern if it doesnt, but something of interest nonetheless.

From my understanding the G42 is not getting HU5 yet. The G87 is as it’s an M car and all the M are getting it now.

New BMW M Models will get iDrive 8.5 but without the new graphical interface.
I'm curious what the difference will be given this part of the article as well. If it doesn't come with the new graphics interface like the improved climate menu then what is it getting?

Well if it is the new chip it may at least be faster. (Not that iDrive 8 is slow!)

I have been wondering about update lifetime on 8 and 8.5 frankly. If they are putting everything into 9 then they won't be optimizing or updating 8 or 8.5 as much.

My car started on the assembly line 6/23 and started final assembly 7/7, so I get the old HU?

It’s not getting the M graphics initially but will down the line with an update.

Here’s the rundown on 8.5 from C&D:

Thanks! I'm happy to see it will be an update down the road, that climate menu looks like a serious upgrade compared to the round circles.

Glad to see they will be iterating on the software, I hope they add more options for the cluster gauges down the line as well.

That’s a good question. I would think you’d get it as those components get added towards the end of assembly. Let me know when you get it.

I have only seen 1 car with 8.5 so far. I didn't notice much difference. The home screen has a new layout, and the climate controls are quite different. Many of the sub menus are exactly the same though. I dont think there are any new capabilities. I didn't notice it being any faster.

I dont think it will be a big deal if you currently have iDrive 8 and can't get 8.5.

That would seem strange in my opinion. Same platform, so would expect hardware update timing to be the same (software changes being a different story as a I understand M models with have unique GUI).

The link and screen shot below shows the current idrive8.0 MY23 G42 M240 & G87 M2 share the same HU-H4. So I'd assume the jump to HU-H5 would occur at the same time. Just my assumption of course.

The M2 will get 8.5 from the factory, or is an update needed? OTA, or does the dealer have to do it?

Not according to BMWs own systems.

All 07/23 and 08/23 cars are still being made with head unit high 4.

You can check the ETK for confirmation.

It is more likely there are the MGU21A revisions, not MGU22.
They MAY support 8.5, but we won’t know until the November 11/23 isteps are out

You mean the same BMW that’s reliably on top of updating it’s own systems?

Well, that system tells you the necessary parts for a particular VIN, so yes I trust it.you could see the inflection point earlier in the year where they started fitting them to the x5 LCI. For a month of production both 4 and 5 were listed.

Right now as of the 7th august update, all 2,3 and 4 series vehicles are still being made with head unit high 4.

They have absolutely messed the roll out of this up though I agree. Though 21 to 22 is also a change from intel to arm, so everything needs recompiling to the new architecture, even if both run 8.

Different models have different features, so from a software standpoint the phased approach does make sense.
