Bimmercode G87 iDrive 8

I know Bimmercode doesn't official support idrive 8 yet, but I figured it would work on some things, and I was right. I chose "M3" and it gave me the options I was looking for, like changing interior lighting, 5 flashes of the turn signal, brake force for extra brake light, warning screen, etc.

There's plenty of other tutorials out there about Bimmercode so this isn't a tutorial at all, just mentioning that it works with our cars in some limited capacity.

And a warning. For the head unit module, following coding and when it was resetting the ECU, both the app and my phone went a little haywire for some reason, but all was OK. Basically, I disabled all connections to the car such as bluetooth and even wifi on my phone. When rebooting from this module, the car reenable the bluetooth connection itself in my phone so my phone started trying to reconnect to everything which caused the app to malfunction. I forced stopped it, shut off the car, disabled bluetooth for the car again, reconnected, and all was well. Perhaps that happens with any car, but just mentioning it here since Bimmercode doesn't officially support idrive8 yet.

That being said, everything I wanted worked.

A shot of the modules that came up.

Ambient lighting control. Although in the app the default is "bronze," this worked with the "ivory" selection in my car."

I set upper to normal blue and lower to red, and it worked.

Just to show you the colors. Here I'm selected to ivory and you can see the blue.

And red at my feet.

How did you get iD8 to show your car with black wheels instead of bicolor?

Hmm I don't think I did anything for that.

Oh ok sitting here now they're bimetallic. When you're moving, the wheels spin so they look black. And that pic is blurry.

Wait I'm not sure I did anything to make it say charging. That may be normal adaptive content for that screen in driving mode.

Can anyone confirm?

See anything to code the anti-dazzle headlights?
How about setting Sport+ or M1/M2 come on as default?
Or a way to have the M Mode to be Sport by default?

I’m interested in those but I don’t think it’s possible (or will ever be).

Anti-Dazzle is possible, I’ve come across a Bimmercode how to video on YouTube. Can’t search right now, but the truth is out there…

Yes and no, there is a section for that but it's for other cars right now. That's what I was messing with trying to see if I could get sport or sport plus to be the default state. It didn't work. That's when I saw "charging battery" and thought it did change something. But then I realized I never really paid attention to that widget in "road mode" and figured it's possible that's normal behavior, but that also doesn't make sense since I'm not aware of us having regenerative braking and such. It kicks to "charging battery" only when I let off gas or brake.

If it's not normal then I messed something up because I can't get it to stop doing it now, even when loading the default backup.

That's what I get for messing with something that isn't ready.

It's the only anomaly I've seen though, if it's not normal.

Yeah there's a video out there but I haven't tried it. I'm probably done messing around until it's ready for idrive 8.

I’ll check later for you.

These cars (and previous ones since 2013) definitely do not have regenerative braking, but they charge the 12V battery when you’re on engine brake (since you don’t need power, it uses the engine energy to charge the battery, to save fuel).

I’ve never seen that screen, so I’ll double check and let you know!

For the G87?
Not saying I doubt it, but I am lol can you find it for us to see?

There are many here bringing coding options but they are for cars like the G42…

No, it was for an iDrive8 car. Coding would be the same I’d think.

If that's the case then this could be normal, because it switches to "charging battery" only when engine braking when I think of it. It just so happened that sometimes I was using the brakes as well when slowing down.

G42s are iDrive 8 now too.
But they're different cars nonetheless. Options will vary a lot

Well, give it a shot and let us know how it goes. As others are saying you can use the G20 coding for the G87.

Nobody is saying that… the car isn’t fully supported yet, so the coding options don’t exist.

Justin just gave examples of the coding he did using the M3 setup. Obviously not everything is available but there are options.

Very true, I think it’s cool to change the light colours inside and all, but I’m looking for the “meat”… lol hopefully there’ll be a way in the future.
