Entertaining, well written piece. I plan on hitting the Dragon on my way home from the PC to aid in the break-in. Always enjoy a stay at the Tapoco.

Insert mandatory nostalgia about how it's not as nice as it used to be since they dropped the speed limit and added all the cops.

I did a BMW Riders Academy Ultimate Test Ride trip for a few days last year and we ripped thru with nary a hint of the fuzz. I’ve gone solo on my bike a few times in the last 3-4 years and I’ve only seen them once. Possibly just been lucky. I’m deducing from your post that it’s an issue now?

Nah, it's just different than it used to be 20ish years back, when the speed limit was something like 50 instead of 35, and pretty much unpatrolled.

Problem with that was asshats tended to come around blind curves and rear end motorcyclists, etc. etc. So that resulted in lower speed limits, and in some parts a heavier police footprint.

I mean, that was the right call, you couldn't keep having tons of fatalities every year and do nothing. Especially as (IMO) it's more crowded than it was 20-30 years back.

Anecdotally, police will tend to give you some leeway as long as you aren't drunk / being an idiot. As a rule, if you are part of an organized activity, you'll probably never even notice them.

Disclaimer: I haven't done the whole tail in well over a decade. So maybe it has loosened up in recent times.

Makes sense. I have always tended to go early in the morning, so I’ve luckily missed the crowds. Did see quite a few grease spots and amazingly they were labeled. That was greatly appreciated as a two wheeler.

Yeah, I think I read there are still at least 2 rider fatalities a year on the Tail. So motorcycle safety is a point of emphasis for the authorities.
