Downpipes or mid pipe for more hp?

Which one produces more power?
Which one is a better mod, yes both are better obviously. I was told down pipes don't do much without a full tune … Just wondering to those that have it what have you found?
Thanks!

The videos of mid pipe everyone gets about 10 hp believe a catless downpipe no tune will get you 16-20hp probably

Catless downpipes are always a performance improvement and especially so when coupled with an after market exhaust. As an example on my Nissan GTR the improvement is 15 to 20 hp. The only downsides are (1) some folks complain of rotten egg smell, (2) to a certain extent you will experience louder exhaust depending upon your exhaust setup, (3) will fail state inspection on those states requiring it. Because of the above factors I went with after market midpipes and exhaust for my GTR. I went with PSI midpipes for my BMW. No catless downpipes for either car. One is able to obtain a passing state inspection sticker but they are obtained in the gray market and $ cost a premium. Too much hassle for me.

I plan on getting a midpipe only with dp. No exhaust set up. Valvtronic seems to be what I'm leaning towards.

downpipe by far. It also enables more aggressive stage 2 tuning.

Why catted mid? Stink reduction?

Yes smell is one of the reason but mainly it will get really loud for my taste. Now if I was to run high flow catted DPs, than I would go full mid as most of guys are running here.

If you get a quality pipe from a reputable brand don't have to worry about any issues. When I used to live up north, I ran catted but in FL everyone I know runs cat-less and some even straight pipe all the way. So in my case I will keep the 2nd OE cats and replace both res with straight and X.

Exactly, running catless downpipes and non-resonated midpipes in combination will be loud. Also running catless downpipes is not an issue in Florida where where they don't have state inspections. Catless is an issue in Texas with most counties.

I had catless dp and stg2 BM3 on my 440 with mppsk. Power was noticeable, but it was hella loud, raspy and the exhaust smell was annoying. Sitting in a drive through would choke the passengers…my wife HATED it.

I have a PSI pipe on order and will do catted dps when I feel like spending another 4k

Agreed! I can only speak for myself but I own a F82 as well, got the intakes, downpipes, exhaust etc. Love the sound and the performance, but once I got the G80, I could care less about the sound, just wanted performance on 93 oct. Went piggyback (Dahler Tune) getting 598 whp on dyojet, with everything else on the car bone stock. Unless you're looking to flash tune it to 750+ whp on corn fuel, downpipes and midpipes ain't doing nothing on stage 1 or 2 on this platform except sound.

What this man said. DPs will not yield any big gains without a full tune (if any gains at all). This include a piggyback controller. If you want some added sound, start with a valve controller first, then go with a single mid to see if its enough.

If you plan on unlocking and getting a full tune, then grab some DP.
