Expiry date of Loctite flange sealant : should I care?

Bought the Loctite sealant, primer, and tip from my local dealership. Both products have a "use by" date of July 2021. From what I understand, they have a one-year shelf life when they are shipped to the retailer.

Does this really matter? Not theoretically, but actually matter.

I have a guy there who is super good to me, so I don't want to ask him to exchange it for me unless it's really necessary. If I had paid full price there would be no question in my mind, but I do plan on using it in July if I use it at all, so maybe I've answered my own question?

TIA

When loctite goes bad it separates into a liquid and a sludge like bad milk. If you can shake it and its one homogeneous fluid it's still good. Usually freezing temps are what kills it I left some in my unheated garage and it went bad but I have 10 yr old tubes in the basement still good.

sorry didn't grok the "flange sealant" part, was thinking thread locker. I would think that stuff would be fine as long as it's still goo.

It’s still goo haha. I know this because I screwed the cap off a bit thinking I’d have to puncture a seal and some started oozing out. Prob the 95-degree weather…

Sounds like they prefer to be stored around 8 degrees Celsius, so I’ve put in a cold storage room.

Thanks!

most of the loctite things are anaerobic, some are moisture cured.

If it's not turned hard or separated it's probably fine.
I've used loctite that was years old without issue.

Thank you. Agreed. I’ve likely got a ton of expired Loctite threadlocker, instant adhesive, etc that’s expired and still works great.

I guess the assumption is this is kinda a single-use thing? Like despite having 7 grams of this product I’ll probably need a fraction of that, and will just end up discarding the remaining amount at a later time…?

Lol, no. Maybe I should have worded that differently.

I’m talking about the primer and sealant used for the front and rear crank seals… If someone has another suggested use for this I’m happy to hear what it is, but I’m saying that despite the fact both the primer and sealant contain far more product than I’d need for this job, I’m assuming there ain’t much else I’m going to use this for, and therefore the rest is likely to go to waste.

I don’t plan on throwing it away, but I also have no clue what else I’d use it for…

Can you share the Loctite number and dealer part number?
I wonder if it's the same retaining compound I need for my rear bushings installation. It calls for Loctite 638, which is not readily available nearby.

Thanks.

Sadly it’s not :-(

It’s Loctite 193140.

From what I can see your only option for purchasing 638 is online, but even here in Calgary I suspect it would be hard to find locally. (I tried checking websites for a few local places.)

I can find Permatex 64000 locally, which should be close in spec. But it's pricey.

Loctite 640 is available and the only difference I can find is that 638 fills gaps up to 0.25mm, while 640 fills up to 0.18mm. Maybe 640 will work for me.

How much is pricey? Just wondering as I saw some sources online that didn’t seem terrible.

$55/50ml bottle at NAPA for the Permatex.

But I see 6ml bottle of Loctite 640 on Amazon for $18. I may get that one. Should be enough for my job.
