How often does BMW change EXT color availability
What I an interested in is trying to get an idea if there might be additional colors or different color selections 2 model years down the road. I know that you can never really know what will be available in the future, but based on previous experience with the 3 series, what can anyone tell me. I remember that the e46 added Imola red and and Blue that had been only M available when you purchased the performance option. Also, when, if ever, might BMW allow you to obtain non standard exterior colors. I know you can now get some interior colors (lemon), but how about exterior colors for the 3 series. Anyone have info? TIA for your comments.

I think it largely depends on popularity.
In the E36 M3 lifecycle they changed from avus blue to estoril after 1 (US) model year. There was a techno violet and a daytona violet. In the E46 M3 world phoenix yellow and laguna seca blue were short lived with no real replacements. As for non-M3 3 series goes, I never paid much attention until the 335. |

I ordered my E92 two weeks ago and was told by my dealer that I could special order any color currently offered across the product line for an extra $2500 (no individual colors). Not worth it to me.

That's not the same thing. The Porsche option is you tell them any color in the world and they'll put it on your car, it doesn't have to be in their model range or even exist before it goes on to your car. It's custom matched to a sample you provide and $3,625.

I asked my dealer about the Individual colors just last Friday: he quoted me $5,000. He explained that because the european cars and american cars are on different assembly lines, they have to pull it off the american line take it over to the european line and back again for completion. I'm sure someone on here knows exactly how far these are, I'm assuming its not even the same facility. Naturally, he said it also usually takes a couple of extra weeks.
ElCapitan - Great interior color combo! In fact, the reason I began inquiring about the individual options was because I wanted to see if they could do the piano black. He said they wouldnt do that. He did show me the "gloss black" trim that is a special order option I wasnt aware of - boy did that look terrible! It reminded me of an old school VCR housing before you take that clear film off the front - very flimsy looking black plastic essentially, nothing like the piano. I am sticking with the Terra/Light Poplar in Sparkling Graphite. Now if only they would make gray poplar for the e90! |
