[Solved] 2006 BMW 330XI noise diagnosis

Brought my 2006 BMW 330XI to BMW Dealer.

== Cause ==
"Found internal fault for transfercase. ", Dealer's report suggests "replace transfercase and mount" then "reprogram vehicle DSC".

I don't know how BMW technician checked my car... Probably they just scan the codes and cleaned my wheels... Shinny!

== Question ==
Could it be just "transfer case actuator" instead of the whole transfer case? How to diagnose?

Or, In general, How to proceed in such a case?

Thx!

========= Update =========
Last weekend, I did two things:
1) Flush the Diff oil.
2) Rotate tires from Rear to Front, Front to Rear; and inflate the tire pressure to specs (32 psi (F), 36 psi (R))

Noise was gone.

Should I dispute the BMW dealer's diagnosis charge which detects a "Transfer Case Internal Error" and suggests to replace the whole Transfer Case for $4000!??

Based on this DIY, I would say it's worth a shot: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=633200

TheBigYhi, thanks very much! This is definitely worth a shot. I will take the actuator off to take a look. I planned to replace the Tcase fluid anyway...

TheBigYhi, a quick question, I read the DIY. But in my case, there's no any lights on, only grinding noise. It gets louder at 40 - 50 MPH. If tcase failed, should there be any lights on? Thx!

Besides Diff Fluid, I also bought Brake Fluid and TCase fluid. Will flush them some day when car hits ~80K.

Thanks to TheBigYhi! This is a better place than BMW shop!
