Would you sell a perfectly good 335i for another one?
Here's the deal: I have an 07 335i w/ 134k miles. Montego blue/black leather. The car is immaculate. Not a ding or scratch outside, interior looks new except the steering wheel trim and there's nothing wrong with it except a little misfire I'm dealing with right now (plugs or coils?). I'm the second owner of the car and it's been very well cared for and has some nice little mods including a Dinan stage 2 tune. I've got a few friends with 335i's and every single one of them has had huge headaches with wastegate rattle, turbo failures, injector issues, and tons of little annoying stuff. I have seriously had no issues with the car at all. My wastegates don't rattle, my injectors are good, etc. The car honestly drives just as good as my buddy's with 42k miles. Ideally, my perfect 335i would be a 2010 6 speed M sport w/ the oyster interior. Would I be crazy to give up a problem free 335i for one with a nicer interior and a few years newer? I really love my car but because I'm always torn on upgrading. There are a few mods I've had planned for a while but am hesitant because of this. What do you guys think? Anyone sold a perfectly good 335i for another?

Honestly this a pretty good thread subject and questions included. My experience might somewhat be the same of your situation now.
I had an 09 e92 335i with some bolts on which I loved the power it made but things were going out (e.g. DTML fuel pump and OEM CP.) Other than that the car really ran just about perfect and it pulled hard as hell with less than 45K miles on it. So I traded it in for a 2010 e90 335i which I'm staying away from the power modding and it has less miles than my previous one plus I'm paying less for this one compared to my 09. I wanted more room for whenever me and my wife have our first baby so that was my motivation on getting rid of it per say. However, a 2010 6 speed M sport is legit and I'd hop all over that most definitely if it has way less miles than what you have currently. But at the sametime are you enjoying a payment free car? (Assuming it's paid off) When you mention the word "upgrade" what are you really upgrading from to another? My options were identical from my 09 to my 2010 just getting more space was the only upgrade I really gained with less miles, and my 2010 is a CPO.

think of it like women. you have a stable, sane, great looking woman now, but she is older.
you can trade her in for a younger hotter sexier one, but she may become batshit crazy and have some problems that your current woman does not have. me personally, i like to stick it in the crazy. |

Yeah I love the LCI look and lower mileage/warranty would be nice, although I have complete confidence in mine even with the high mileage. My car is paid for but I would be buying the next one with cash so I wouldn't have any payments either way. I hear so many horror stories about n54s but I know the people with the good ones don't have anything to complain about so the likelihood of getting a lemon probably isn't too great. You guys think it's worth the risk of selling a car I trust for an unknown one with less miles and the updated styling?

Dang I've found a few 09-10s that look pretty tempting but it would be hard to sell mine and drop an additional 8k on essentially the same car haha

How long have you had your car (ie. since what mileage?). Is it also a 6MT?
I think the price delta between what you'll get for such a high mileage and first year 335 will be way too big to justify getting into essentially the same car again - ESPECIALLY knowing full well that your current car gives you no real reason to justify the swap out. Bear in mind the 2010 will be a N55 motor... An MSport body is such an easy mod to do, hardly cause for selling your car. I think the real justifications to sell would be if your current car is a 6AT and you want the 6MT, your current car has minimal options and you want iDrive and more toys. Visual differences are easily retrofittable and at a much less cost of buying a newer car... Just my $0.02 |

Just made a similar decision changing from a 2008 335i 6AT sedan to a 2011 version of the same car. I went from a lightly optioned vehicle (sports pkg, no premium) to a fairly loaded one. The additional features add to the driving experience and the CPO status provides warranty peace of mind. If you are not bothered by the engine change from N54 to N55, I suggest getting a late-build 2011 car (post 9/10). There was a significant electronics update (combox) that added new connectivity features including BT audio streaming.

Why not both? Threesomes are fun! If you can afford it swing both ways... Back on topic...You can swap your interior seats and trim to the oyster interior you want and also get the M sport parts for your existing 335i. It would be a lot cheaper to just buy the parts and swap them out on your current vehicle. The biggest part is your desire to go to a 335i with a manual transmission. If you sell your current car you probably will get a big loss on it compared to how much you need to pay for the newer car and I'm not sure if that big $$$$ gap is worth it. You know the history of your current car, the maintenance is up to date, interior/exterior is in good shape, so I'd say keep the current 335i and just change the interior to oyster color and the exterior to M-sport parts. You can swap the transmission to a manual version, but that's big bucks in terms of labor, time, and parts cost.

I would keep your current car. There's no guarantee that the newer car will be as reliable as your current 335i. Also, as others have said, you can easily upgrade to M-sport bumpers, although the interior would probably be pretty costly to swap.

Switching platforms is something I deeply consider all the time for a variety of different reasons. There are a ton of costs associated with changing cars, and obviously many potential risks/benefits. To me the switch that the OP is considering isn't at all worth it. I would modify/upgrade the current car or if switching it should be to something that isn't so close to what you currently have or could easily get very close to the same experience/enjoyment for less money. However if you were considering going to a new M3/M4 or M235i then I would probably support that switch.

A new m4 is what I dream about at night haha but unfortunately that's out of the picture. I will never finance a car so this limits my options a bit but I really am happy with mine. Just makes me wonder if it's worth it to buy my 'perfect 335' but the additional money for essentially the same car really is hard to justify.
