First oil change impressions
Did my first oil change. Gotta say I'm not a fan of bmw lift points, it makes it a royal pain in the Ass to get the car off the ground and then normal jacks do not fit. So I built this thing today. Makes things quite simple for an oil change.

lol. good job. Yeah, they aren't the easiest lift points to get to but getting a low profile 3ton jack from harbor freight solves that problem...
Or ramps.

Does it not scrape? I was also concerned with ramps sliding from under the car as I drive up the ramps on garage floor.
My car is an e90 RWD /sport package. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299654" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://www.e90post.c...p?t=299654</a>" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://<a href="http...299654</a></a>" rel="ugc" target="_blank">http://<a href="http://<a href="http...54</a></a></a>

I like my car level when it drains so I can get as much out as possible. I usually lower it back to ground level, then jack it back up again to replace the drain plug.

A mechanic friend of mine used to pour oil in the car while it was draining, like 1 quart of oil to flush the remaining dirty oil out. I always thought it was a waste though, no way I'd do it with the 7$ a quart synthetic. |

No problems with scraping or sliding - the m3 rep front bumper just touches but not to the point of any flexing. Just make contact with the tires and it will almost climb up without any throttle. When you do give throttle, it takes just the lightest pressure to. I find it does get more out as with the front slightly raised. The problem that can happen is the bottom road shield can hang down slightly and will disrupt the oil flow when the plug has just been pulled and some oil will get on the shield causing some dripping afterward. Solution, lift up on the shield right as the oil begins to flow for the first 20 seconds.

See how the bolt goes in sideways, not from the rear, the drain is not on the rear on my car, its on the side (you can confirm this next time you are under your car) This diagram shows the same thing, drain bolt part #2 goes into the side of that big hump. The drain is actually on side that big hump, towards the front more than the rear, so if the front of the car is high, that there will be oil trapped in the hump. There's an area there that won't drain if the front is high (anything lower than that plug). See this pic. They should have put the drain to the rear of that big hump, then it all would drain. Diagram I made to demonstrate, using koolaid man as the trapped oil. Last edited by mike3000fl; 12-21-2014 at 12:36 PM.. |

The amount of "trapped" oil is miniscule. I'd be surprised if it was even a 1/4 quart. Won't matter to anything.

The amount of "effort" to lower jack and then give it a few pumps to get it back up later is miniscule. I'd be surprised if it was even 5 mins. Won't matter to anything. We are doing an oil change, why not try to change all the oil? |
