Rear Wheel Bearing Life
Hi,
Just replace both rear wheel bearings on my 335. The car has 85k mile and the failure seems premature. All races had significant fretting. ID & OD, inner & outer on both sides. Car is a one owner 07 6sp that has never been tracked and has mostly freeway miles. Has anyone else had such a failure? See photos. Thanks |

BMW has a tendency to under lubricate their bearings. Just visit E36 and E30 forums. Some have gone to inserting synthetic grease with a needle into the replacement bearings because of this.
I have replaced countless bearings on BMW 3 series and some of them are almost impossible to get out even with a torch. Most show wear as yours does but much much worse and typically even with the bearing removal tool the bearing comes out in pieces... |

I had my 2010 E90 328i rear right wheel bearing replaced recently at about 100,000km (about 63k miles). It was making a loud droning noise as I go over 25mph and the noise was unbearable at highway speeds.

I had my rear wheel bearing on the driver's side go out around 80,000km.
I had it replaced at the dealer out of warranty (at my cost!), and it then went out 20,000km later. Thank God for that 2 year warranty, it was replaced again at that point. Now, at 140,000km, they've all been fine. I think some are just defective. |

different car, but, I had done a front wheel bearing replace and the new one started making noise less like 5 months after.
Could have been the part, or the wheel hub install, or the excessive torquing of the wheel hub nut. Second time around I did it right. No more probs. |
