Check the air box and the hose connected to it. You may have a leak somewhere around the intake hoses.

How would I check it? Could it be sucking in too much air?

based on searches I did on google, open up the air box and close it again. Check the hoses, make sure all connections are tight and not letting air out.

If it were me, Id disconnect everything, clean it all up, put some plastic dressing to make it look nice, and put it back together. Did just that when I replaced the sparks/coils, and I ended up with a nice looking engine
