Newbie to the X5 'problems' - From what I gather in my research, the lawsuit 'fix' must be verified hands on. The reason I ask, looking at '12 ///M with 74k on the clock. If you call BMWNA with VIN can they tell you if it's been completed?

(sorry for off topic). As a side note and I'm super happy, I just picked up a '99 M Roadster... 70k on the clock... Imola/Black - it needs a few things cosmetic and it needs some maintenance complete.

Thanks!

Being it is an s63 and not an n63, BMW may not consider these two the same motors. Even though everyone here knows the longs blocks are very similar

Another one done! (nearly)
I brought my '12 X5 50i in for the passenger airbag recall 1 week+ ago and asked them to check on the valve stem seal issue, then went on vacation for a week. Got back last night and gave them a call for status this morning, they DID go with the seal replacement under the lawsuit, and have it nearly done! Shooting for pickup tomorrow. Have to say, having your car worked on while you are out of town is much less hassle!

SA told me this will all be cared for by BMW, that they have been doing quite a few lately. Wow what a weight lifted... I won't be worrying so much if I keep the vehicle longer.
I don't even mind having to pay dealer price for a needed brake fluid flush while in there since the above work will be taken care of at no cost.

Hopefully it all goes back together without issue. They are actually planning on finishing it today and driving it overnight to make sure its good to go for me tomorrow. Dealers get a bad rap but I've got to give some love to Hendrick BMW of Charlotte. I am actually quite happy to have them on the job. Never had an issue with them, and I feel like if anything pops up after the fact, they will take care of it to the best of their ability.

***EDIT***
I have 59k miles, and was consuming approx 1 qt of oil every 800 miles. The idle-then-punch-it self diagnosis gave a nice cloud of smoke.

*** EDITx2 ***
Got the vehicle back 3 days ago, it seems perfect! No codes, Sounds and runs like it should! I haven't re-done the self-test for the smoke to see the difference, I will do that this wknd. ***-> Performed idle 5 min then punch it, no smoke!!
Dealer had it ~8 days total, I didn't rush them as I was away on vacation.
Passenger airbag recall was done also, no issues spotted with dash, no discernible creaks.
I paid $180 for the brake fluid flush I requested ONLY; Recall and engine work were at No Charge! SA told me that BMW paid them $6400 for the valve stem seal work, which would have been my charge if not for the lawsuit. He mentioned BMW recently reduced their rate on that work and it had come down from ~$7k.

I went through the decently long parts list of all they replaced, almost all the top end gaskets, hoses & plastic pipes that folks here say crack and throw codes when they fail, which is terrific for me down the road. They also tested turbos (fine) and compression in engine (fine) and refilled coolant and oil with this job. I got a lot for my money's worth!

I didn't even do any (lawsuit) paperwork except sign the finished work order when I picked it up. All in all a very impressive service experience.

What a nice feeling to have this nagging issue over and done with no money out of pocket.
Ok it took a lawsuit! But BMW is finally stepping up!

I encourage anyone with this oil consumption issue and a reputable dealer to have your car tested. As they do more of these I think they are not only gaining experience but committing to knocking them all out, no questions asked.

2013 N63 F10 with 60k here. I received$1.00 oil change offer with active inspection so I took the opportunity to request oil test, since I have added close to 3 liters for the last 3000 miles.
To my surprise, the SA told me they checked my exhaust and there is some black smoke or white, I forgot, and they will send in for the VSS replacement.
I took my car in the 11th and today I was told BMW approved the VSS replacement as well as some top oil pan leak which is also covered.
I guess I will be driving the loner X5 40i with 200 miles for 2 weeks..
The point is, they may not need the oil test at all to approve for the engine or VSS replacement, my SA told me they just took a picture with smoke and some write-up and sent to BMW for approval. My point is, Bring it in asap if you have oil consumption problem..

Yes! Same end result. I think once they had to start doing the work, they just decided that anyone with this motor and reasonable symptoms, would get it.
Possibly the "oil consumption test" IS really just checking for smoke...

I really thought that the NEW Valve Stem Seals they were putting in were "Improved" parts over the originals... I swear I saw that somewhere...

Last week I attended a BMW dinner and was discussing this with a guy who works for a local BMW dealership who told me they install the exact same parts that went bad originally.

This is all I heard. Anyone else have info?

If this is similar to the N62 valve stem seal issues, there is an updated part. The newer seals are made of viton rubber where the older ones were standard. I need to do VSS on my 4.8is E53 and I was sure to order the updated viton rubber seals.
