New High Engine Temp Warning
Gentlemen,
Car has been well. Pulled into my garage yesterday after work and coolant fan running full bore. I thought that odd in that I drove home at 0700 when it was cool, and the drive was a soft end of shift 5 mile drive. Also noted that as soon as I turned engine off, the fan stopped. I thought that odd. Today as soon as I started the engine the fan was at full speed. Drove softly for 5 minutes and High Temp Warning came on. Immediately switched cold AC to full heat on high fan speed and drove gingerly to let air cross the radiator. The heat within the passenger cabin was unbearably hot. Got back home and let car cool. Checked reservoir and was full. No leaks on garage floor or in engine bay. I don’t think it’s the water pump for the coolant is circulating to the heater core. I’m not familiar with the multitude of sensors on this new generation Ger...Bavarian car. I’m getting the sense it is an electrical issue because of the fan’s behavior. Full high on start up. Full high, then turns off when engine turned off. If car were truly hot and fan was responding by being Hi, it would remain on to cool residual in radiator when car turned off. Any suggestions for diagnostic maneuvers... Thanks in Advance Craig

I just had my engine replaced. A test drive of the vehicle revealed a high temp indication, so they replaced coolant temp sensor. The day I picked up the vehicle, after driving the 3 miles home, I had the same error indicate. Upon cold starting the vehicle the next morning, the error occured quickly, fans went to full bore, etc...and the vehicle had not even started to warm up. The dealer then replaced the LOWER coolant temp sensor and everything has been fine since then.
TL, DR - There is more than one temp sensor. |

if you have rear seat climate controls my guess is your water pump is bad and will need to replaced. was a $1000+ job for me at a shop with oem parts. Its an electric pump and they die.

If it weren’t for the cam adjuster actuator issue I would’ve done the pump myself. I’ll let the warranty work it all out. Is going to a great indy. BMW service shop by me is not well spoken of by many up here.

Where did that rtfm thing come from ?
I didn’t put it there. I have no reason to have said, or thought such a thing. Was able to erase it. It was a ‘0012 sign’ thing that was attached when I included the posters quote. Was not an insult I generated.

Actually couldn’t work out getting to Cantech Motorwerks in North Syracuse until today. They are about 70 mile from me. I do have confidence in them.
Will update as I get more information. Thanks for asking.

‘Twas the death of the pump.
Changed out thermostat while there, even though no code for it. Once pump changed and engine ran cool other codes never returned. Also changed rear coils as I had a slight sag on one side. Now I don’t. All covered by my warranty except the coil, but I already knew that. I missed The Horse while it was ill.
