Would I buy my x5 again? Yeah. If I had to do it again I'd look for a diesel. I'm already looking at X5M's. I have a decent spec car, missing 3rd row (who really wants it anyways?), rear tv/dvd and heads up. I have the cooling and massaging front seat which is......different.

I need to replace the filter housing gasket as it's seeping at 54k. I'm sure eventually the valve cover gasket. I've been focused on suspension mods. I have H&R springs but can't find a shock to run them with. Coil overs seem to be my only other option. So if you're into that, there's that issue.

Beyond that the N55 with the stage 1+ BMS and filter gets the job done! I have no complaints about it otherwise. If anything it's niggly "wish list" stuff I.e. newer iDrive etc.

I'd buy another E92 but probably not another X5.

I have had a 2008 E70 for just about a year and have about 80k on the odometer. I have replaced many gaskets to stop oil leaks which were pretty straight forward DIYs. One belt snapped yesterday and you need some special tool to fix it so as of now I'm SOL. To top it off there's something up with the air suspension that I'll dig in to once the belts is installed.

I have had my E92 M3 for about 3 years now granted it is considerably lower miles and is driven less, I have had way fewer problems so far.

E70 parts are much cheaper than on the M and DIY is slightly more feasible with more space to work. Unless you have the model with the AC belt of course.

Overall the X5 has been a great vehicle for road trips and whatnot. It's also a comfortable and smooth ride. Like most BMWs built around 2007-2013, the interiors are plush and feel solid. I hope to put many more miles on this thing.

I would recommend this car if you can stomach the repairs and the price tags that come along with them. I'm sure the LCI models are great cars.

I'm a DIY'er, but for this I have some reserve budget for wallet mechanic repairs and a lift for the garage. The main thing I need to avoid is being left on the side of the road with a 6 month old baby and my wife in our 70k mile X5, after having sold our TMU 300k+ MILE 4Runner that we crossed the mountain in last weekend (and seen from Canada to Mexico, SE Utah, Las Vegas, etc. under my ownership). For example I may do my own oil pan gasket and use that savings to fund my lift and while it's down driving the M3 on Michelin PSS's in the winter is fine where I live outside a few days a year.

Last week I did exhaust donuts in the M3 (PITFA) and wanted to finish that before the 328i got its new battery, we're back to 3 sorted cars so it's time to drive an X5 on 20's.

I'm looking at ~20k for a ~70k mile 6 yr old X5. A 4Runner of similar miles and age is over 30k. Sure, I've used my 4R for it's capability plenty, like the time I tore the running boards off this spring in the forest, but I'm done with that. Ignoring depreciation there's some significant value in the X5.

Thanks, but let's give out respect to the first pic too as it was taken in Moab! The second pic was taken before making a day trip to take a shuttle up Mt Bachelor to ride back to Bend, OR. I wasn't allowed to drive my car that day as my 2 friends from out of town played rock paper scissors.

Having issues with the throttle sticking (2nd time).

First time I took into the shop, ran great for about 7 months and then got Engine Failsafe Program. Ran codes, throttle stuck. Replaced throttle body on Saturday and still have Engine Failsafe Program and no power for first 1/3 of gas pedal.

At 70k miles, have the major issues replaced and you should be good for another 70k miles or 5 years or so.
Water pump, thermostat, OFHG, oil pan gasket, tensioner and belt, expansion tank, battery

I'm not sure what else but if you have those done, I don't see why you would be stranded on the side of the road until the next time those things fail.

The X5 is a great road tripper and I don't think you'd regret it. Goes good along with the E92 M3 as well

I've been fairly lucky with my 2012 50i but given what I've spent on repairs and what has been discussed on this board, I doubt the wife will let me have another X5. The E53 3.0 was bulletproof compared to the E70's. Something about those old school inline 6's I miss. I may look into the Toyota SUVs.

It's 2018 and if a vehicle can't reasonably make it to 200k without taking out a second mortgage, that's just bad. And with the warranty and maintenance cutting back, I just find it difficult to justify its future ownership. BTW I'm at 127k miles and worried about the turbos

Loving my X5M still a year later, but it looks like I probably have to sell due to life circumstances. If I am able to pick another one up in the future, I will, but hopefully a 2013 instead of 2010. The E70 is the look that I love, so I probably wouldn't want to go any newer.

im in the same boat as you with the X6 M. Will get a 2013 in the future once my 2010 is dead.

never again bmw has so many electrical problems and many others to boot.every bmw i have owned or anyone else i know has had nothing but problems with them.i guess if your filthy rich its no big deal. but its sad you cant spend less than a G everytime you do repairs .i could buy any pile ford out there for a quarter of the cost and would be way more reliable then any bmw and fords are piles.sure bmw"s drive nice but so does ferrari and how much a person spends repairing there bmw they could afford a ferrari.i repair vehicles for a living and bmw,VW,audi and mercedes all poor german engineering make are shop alot of $$$$$ even are german techs stay away from the german cars they like reliable vehicles like toyota,lexus,nissan and american wich makes me laugh cause germans even know how poor german engineering is.good luck keeping your wallet fat owning a bmw

people keep their BMW till the warranty is over.
If you find one 2-years old, it won't be 40% less

I've had 4 BMW's over the last 17 years, never once had an electrical problem on any of them. I've had some other issues along the way, but mostly stuff to be expected on a used German car. What's the alternative, a problem free Toyota? Then I'm driving a boring appliance.

I tend to agree. I like to find specific models 2-3 years old, usually CPO and/or add an extended warranty, that's where the value is IMO. The depreciation in the first few years is crazy, I personally could not purchase a new BMW and watch it's value tank so quickly.

The 40% number you threw out is almost exactly spot on in regards to my E70 purchase. Mine was $78K new as it's configured, I purchased it 2.5 years later for $48K with 28K miles, which is almost exactly 40% depreciation.
