Thought i would update....since january this would come back every 2k miles or so... magnitudes less than last fall and summer. Over the last month it is back very frequent....wonder if the diesel winter mix helped it?

So went to dealer...they said replace injector. I said already did....so i said I was going to go home and replace injector 3 with injectors 6 to see if the code swapped.

Today the engine light came back on and it was injector 6 again. I called the BMW Tech and he suggested that I put the same code in all injector. I used the code from injector 1. He said it might run like krapp for a little while but it'll clean up in that should remove the issue. He said if that doesn't work then I need a new DDE. I forgot to ask if the software on the DDE is up-to-date does anyone know how to check that?

Winkfp will update the module, assuming you have the latest daten file. It will automatically show the update file before you proceed to execute.

I know nothing about Deisel engine but don’t ista have a injector calibrating mode?
Even though the code will make it perform great when new but the adaptation calibration mode will make it run optimum.

Thanks for the response....i dont think i have that software...i cannot find it in bmw tools.

So..swapped back the injector codes to the original values and the SEL came back on. Thinking i am going to have to replace the dde...i will try to find one used. Does anyone know if these are just plug snd play?

What about having the DDE flashed?.i see some sites that fo this for performance improvements...

Ive had the zero quantity adaption code for cylinder 4 for about a year now on my tuned/deleted 335d. Ive done almost everything you can do to fix it, replace injectors, cbu cleaning, reset adaptions, switch the injectors between eachother, replace glow plugs, Still it comes up. At this point I believe my DDE is just messed up possibly, so I will be swapping DDE with my friends tuned/deleted 335D this weekend to see if it will come up with a completely different DDE (my friends 335D has zero issues).

Please let us know if that works.... I have been thinking about replacing my DDE as well but due to the price tag I want to know if it's going to help. My zero quantity adaption has been present for about a year and a 1/2 now.

I appreciate you letting us know either way...

You can always buy a DDE from a wreck, clone your current DDE and then have the dealer update the software on the new DDE. They usually will bill you for an hour

Thats what i planned to do....on ebay a used dde is 400 to 500 and then to clone it is another 300 to 400 based on the people on ebay that will do it.

So before i spend 700 to 900 i want to be confident that it will fix issue.

I was researching cloning these myself but from what found the software is expensive. If someone knows a reasonable diy clone procedure i would love to know it.

I saw a couple dde's on eBay for around $200usd. to clone you can try your luck with a bootleg version of ktag

Btw you can’t just swap DDE’s, won’t work. EWS4 will not allow the engine to turn over. I tried that when diagnosing my buddy’s 335d. Purchased another DDE and swapping it. And, you cannot align the EWS4 with ISTA. You need additional tools. Best way is to have a tuner copy DDE’s

Also having the same issue with his deleted 335d. Cylinder 6 as well. Following

Thanks for the help....do you know if the $200 dde will work in my x5? I accessed my current dde to get the numbers on it...it is 8572479. I have been looking for the exact same one.

I will start looking for ktag...

For the 2nd year in a row this code goes away with cold weather. This year i had been also monitoring my coolant temp during the cold weather to make sure i am at correct temp and it is....

Makes me wonder if the dde is really the issue... would not expect dde to be temp specific. Do you think i should still swap dde?

I look for used dde every month or so and the ones that are interchangeable seem to be 600+ add 400 for cloning.

My car runs fine...just get annoyed by the sel light. Was wondering if this light would go away if i....

Quick update:

I continually seem to have to replace the thermostat every 3-6 months because the housing tab breaks... last year after i changed the thermostat the 1st time the code went away 8 weeks after i swapped the thermostat... i changed it a 2nd time in Nov and at end of Jan early Feb the code went away. Code came back i mid march...checked coolant temp and sure enough bad thermostat again...replaced it monday...broken tab again.

Would carbon build up throw this code?...meaning a sawp the thermostat and run the engine for weeks at the intended temp and crsp gets cleaned out?

Funny i stumbled on this old post... i had dudmd remote into my car and remove the code for this issue so the engine light would stay. All was good but now 3 years later i got diesel wicked into dde so going to have to get it replaced and cloned.
