Back from the dead, having just done the opposite, I did a 3rd row delete. I bought our 2011 X5 new and now my kids are old enough they won't ride in the back...

The swap is fairly straight forward but in the end, there are a ton of differences and you'd be nickel and dimed to death if you tried buying all the parts individually. I happen to have a whole parts car, so I had all the parts available to me.

Just some of the things you need to retrofit the 3rd row:

Rear carpet from the center console back (two pieces of carpet, one for the 2nd and one for the 3rd row)
2nd row seats (the tilt lift function is all together built into the seat)
3rd row seats and support (it's one big module)
3rd row controls (fan blower etc)
2nd row seat support seat lock brackets (bolt to the C-pillar and hold the 2nd seats so they can lock into place)
C-pillar seat belt trim (doing a 3rd-row retrofit, the 2nd-row seat belts get moved up a position on the pillar, requiring new trim)
D-pillar seat belts & trim
Rear floor cargo cover
Delete spare tire, you won't need this where you're going (plus there isn't space for it)
Bag of bolts

I'm probably missing something, but those are the major parts.

There is some coding/wires that need to be done. There is the 2nd row "seat not locked in position" sensor - although while that's nice to have probably isn't a deal-breaker. Also the 3rd-row vent/fan blower power. Without it, it's gonna get HOT back there for the kiddos in the summer - but your kids will still complain because it's like blowing through a straw.

There is a weight difference, the 3rd row easily adds 150-200 pounds of seats and brackets. And it's not just the 3rd row, the 2nd-row seats with the tilt mechanism weights a ton!

I probably have some pictures and more details if anybody is really interested.

Could just the 3rd row be added without swapping in the second row folding seats? We'll rarely use the 3rd but still...I also don't wanna have to redye a tons of leather in Sakhir Orange if I can get away with just one row.

If you were closer to NY I would swap with you.
