Vanos bolts or worse?

New member here and first post. Curious what you all think this sound is? It's been getting gradually louder and is to the point where I've stopped driving it. No codes so far. Sounds too metallic and higher up on the engine to be rod bearings but I could be wrong.

126K miles on this 2011 X5 35i. It's an early N55 (M0-spec) that still has the N54 style HPFP on it.

Vanos recall was completed just before we purchased it as a lease return back in 2014.

I think so, it looks good after some polishing, but the bottom of that connecting rod is very dark from getting hot and has deformed just enough that it won't slip back over the crank journal with the new bearings in it so looking at having to replace that rod.
