Good luck OP, looks like a fairly standard report for a "high" mileage BMW. Could have been much, much worse.
Ya they can't be beat with that warranty and their service.

That's about double what a resonable Indie shop should charge. I've done the work myself so I know exactly what it entails. Usually turbo replacement is a miserable job, but in N63/S63 is pretty easy since reverse flow engine, turbos are on top and easy to access.

New Garret Turbos - 1K each, available multiple sources online

New Gaskets & V Clamps - 100 (OEM aftermarket)

New Oil return lines, Oil feed lines - 350

6-8 hours of labor 1000-1600 depending on shop.

So even on the high side you are looking at 3500-4K. Not sure where that other 3K is coming from. Unless they are getting all parts from dealer, if so then RUN do not walk to another shop.

BTW, why did they tell you need new turbos?

Also, consider replacing the turbo oil return housing while you are doing the work, its right there and will only add 100 dollars to the cost.

Honestly, I would encourage her to sell the car. Not worth it. I have a 2012 X5 N63 and am the original owner. BMW seriously screwed up on the engine. Huge black eye for them, including the class action lawsuit. They should have recalled every one.

Redneck -
Why is TIS required for removing and re-installing the Alternator?
I did my turbo coolant T's and want to do the Y connector next... I hadn't seen mention of TIS for doing that job until your posts here...
Are you saying use TIS just to better understand the steps, or is there some secret stuff I need to know? (honestly I've never seen TIS, so not sure what I am missing)

I recommended he get TIS as he is new to the X5 and having the resource really helps out even for basic stuff like the alternator and especially if you do a turbo replacement. PM me if you want to learn how to access.

So a new issue popped up last night. Passenger side heat stopped working as well or all together. Thoughts?

Seems like this question comes up frequently.

Commonly it’s the heater control valve that fails.

Start by checking the temp of the heater hoses going to the firewall while heat is on. If their not hot it’s the heater control valve.

Also check your coolant level.

My biggest fear was the valve stem failure on the n63. Each one I looked at, I checked the carfax to see if they had been replaced, only 1 out of the like 20 I looked at, had that work done.
And I really wanted the 50i! But the one that had the valve stem seals done sold before I could grab it. Didn’t find another one so got a n55.

Well now it's going into limp mode while driving. Idling rough as hell. Not sure if it's the fuel pump, injectors, or plugs/coils.

I would get bimmergeeks protools app and scan for codes.
It’s easy to use and quick to check for errors.

I hadn't heard of this tool. Do a lot of people use it? It looks like it does more than just pull generic OBDII codes (which I can currently do with Torque Pro and a generic BT OBDII adapter). Is that correct?

Protools reads all BMW codes and can code BMW's if you pay to upgrade it. Other options are foxwell NT510 or better scanners with BMW software or laptop + DCAN cable with ISTA. Laptop with ISTA is cheapest and most powerful (assuming you already have a laptop). Also most difficult to use as steep learning curve.

Looks like there are "borrowed" versions of ISTA out there that I've seen. I know a legit version is not cheap.

Yes, that’s correct. I call the scan a deep scan, it will scan and show each fault in each module. It is lifetimes ahead of a plain obd2 scanner.
I’ve never used ista, I tried a few times and could never figure it out.
Protools can be used on an android phone or tablet and translates everything to English.
You can also change code settings in each module with it.

Do you have any solid links to current versions of ISTA?

So I couldn't be more frustrated after today. The vehicle started going into limp mode immediately at the beginning of this week. It idles really rough and has a noticable loss of power. Dropped it off at the shop that I use and codes show a misfire happening in a cylinder on each side. So said it was the spark plugs, which is what I suspected.

So I took the car home and changed it all the plugs and coils with parts from FCP euro. I torqued the plugs to 23nM and checked the gap in them all. Everything was good.

Got everything back together and the problem is still there. I thought is going to be the hero and save her a shit run of maintenance costs for a simple job. Kinda feeling like a zero at the moment.

I didn't see the codes. The shop, a BMW specialty shop, said there were misfires in two cylinders and even told me the cylinders. I don't remember off hand which ones they were. I do remember it was one on each side. They also said replacing the plugs would fix it. Well I replaced the plugs and coils and the problem is still there.

Did you have the codes cleared after you did the work?
You should invest in your own scanner that will read all Bmw faults if you’ll be attempting to fix this yourself.

A code for an injector may have also been present for cylinder misfire.

Pull the plugs again and smell it, if it smells like gas and it's wet, chances are it's your injectors! Do that at least to the cylinders that's misfiring. I had the same case but different times
