You can replace number 2 as a maintenance item.....I will be doing this as soon as i can be bothered to order it.

x5M - the pump and filter are on same unit. Great advice above about how to change. Make sure you go to the right side (passenger) and the gas is low (the other side is the level sender).

Thanks everyone;
So the consensus appears to be that in order to change out a fuel filter, one needs to spend $350+ as it's integrated within the pump. Do I have this correct? Having had '3' fuel pumps fail on my E39 M5 over 300,000 miles (filter was not integrated), its a very good idea to change out a pump as preventative maintenance, short of 75,000 +/-. |

Modern cars these days don’t have a REAL fuel filter that traps fine particles. The ones in the gas tank just filter or I would say trap larger objects that could be floating in the tank like rust scales, metallic contaminants ,and trashes that can enters the fuel tank during gas fill ups(sharing pump nozzles). Gas station usually have filters at the pump before it goes into the car.
Those in-tank filters usually last the lifetime of the pump. I wouldn’t worry about it. |

I am due to change the pump in my X5M as I always change out fuels pumps at 100k miles, well almost. The only time my 4.8is left me stranded was.....in the middle rush hour on the 91 freeway, fast track, then each of the 4 lanes over. 30 minutes to get it to the side. Needed a fuel pump which I already had on the shelf. 105k miles.

Did you ever find out if there is a 2nd fuel filter that you can replace without the pump? That looks like the diesel model to me.
My 13 x5 m is currently in limp mode. 64k miles with a p0087 code. I hope it is the low pressure fuel sensor and not the pump. Seems like 64k miles is low for a fuel pump to go bad. Does running fuel system cleaner help clean the fuel filter? Any advice is appreciated. |

I work at Toyota R&D; it's mind boggling to try to wrap your head around each destination's regulatory constraints. Folks would be surprised at all of the nuanced changes a new delivery destination imposes on vehicle development. |

The B12 Chemtool breaks off large portions of fuel solids, bringing up the dreaded Reduced Power engine error. A safer alternative is use a Nitrogen-based PEA fuel additive instead: Techron, Gumout Regane, Lucas Fuel Treatment(BEST). It’s this magic sauce that melts fuel solids away. Best applied to quarter tank and run hard until nearly empty. Fill only with Shell, Chevron, or Sinclair/ConocoPhillips Premium gasoline.
