Help - Big Problem !!

I purchased a 2011 X5 50i with the N63 motor exactly 3 years ago.
It had 60K on it then, has 90K on her now.
On the first drive (back from the dealer), I floored it. Instead of dropping down a gear or two taking off like a rocket, it sputtered and I got the dreaded "Engine Malfunction!, reduced power" light.
I was peed-off !!
I found a place to pull over, put her in park, turn her off, then restart.
No problem, no light.
I drive this car for 3 years, 30k miles never having that happen again.
I raced every Mustang and Camaro I could find, what a great car !!

Yesterday while running normal, I floored it, it stumbled and I got the same light. This time when I stopped and restarted it, it continued.
This morning same problem, I then tried unplugging the battery for a while, hoping the modules would reset. no go

After that I plugged in Carly for BMW (full version) and ran diagnostics on the engine and got this.
002B1C
Misfiring, cylinder 7 (great, a generic message)

I did some research, and it's highly unlikely 3 years ago a coil or plug went bad, just for a moment, when I floored it, then was fine for the next 3 years.

Maybe this episode has nothing to do with the one 3 years ago, (but it's very suspicious that it happened the same, exact way, when flooring it).
It didn't sloooowly go bad, it was instantaneous 3 years ago, just like now.

I cleared the code, popped the hood, let the car cool down a couple hours.
I just started her up and eased her out of the driveway, then eased her down the street. not even 100ft and it kicked on.

Is this electrical, is something causing one of the injectors to be shut down ??

I am a single dad w/2 school kids, living paycheck to paycheck and I am screwed right now. I have lost half my pay due to covid-19

Any suggestions to diagnose it will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for your angst at this time.
You received the car at 60 k miles but can never be sure about status of plugs/coils and when they were last changed. You now have 30 k more miles on them. You’re getting a mis-hit there so I’d start there first.
Are you handy, and can change them out on your own ?

Same thing happened to me too. Start by changing the plugs/Coils (use BMW original) and if problem persists, it's the Injectors.

If you didn't have the original parts, BMW might not move to Injectors unless the plugs/coils are switched to OEM, ask me how I know?

Good way to check if it's the coils is swap coil with cyl 5 or something.

Go for a drive ..if the code occurs again and goes to cyl 5, you know it's the coil.

If it stays on cyl 7 u can swap the spark plug from 7 to...3?

Retry. It'll be better to troubleshoot this first before spending on an injector.

Also, I add Techron to my gas on a very regular basis on all my cars. Did so on my 32 year old Porsche for 20 years. My injectors looked brand new at the very end. I buy it in bulk.

I am sure Injectors are under warranty for 12 yrs/120,000 miles at least in an X5M, please confirm your application?

They replaced 2 on mine ('12 X5M with 42K miles) and it runs flawlessly bow.

Problem is I read this is a generic code that would even pop up if you had a 6 cyl (so it could be any cylinder) ??

thanks again guys, if I had a free guess, it sounds like a weak coil to me, (will idle just fine, but don't have enough juice under load).

Misfire code is a right of passage for n63/S63 engines. Like other members mentioned Normally coil or sparkplug, then next is injectors. Lucky for you, changing coils and plugs on this car is as easy as it gets. Infact coils don't require anything but your finger to remove (once you get the lame air cleaners out of the way. You can do all the plugs and coils easily in a few hours.

I just got done rebuilding the top end of mine (2012 50i, 150k miles. I have extra bremi coils and bosch plugs with less then 20k on them. Private message me if interested. Otherwise go to FCP euro for best deal on new plugs and coils if you want brand new. Go with Eldor or Bremi coils, Bosch or NGK plugs.

Your going to want to replace all the plugs and coils now with your mileage or get ready vfor a misfire code every other week. Trust me, I was in Exactly your position 2 years ago and have learned much since then. Amazing engine if maintained properly.

Eldors coils are original equipment and the best (BMW used Bosch, Eldor, and Delphi). Same coil, half price without the BMW logo. Same goes for the spark plugs, Bosch plugs are the same but not matter what coils/plugs you choose, it won't effect your warranty on the injectors.

AutoZone has a nice 14mm 12point thin-walled spark plug socket that works perfect for our engines. Get yourself a good extension with a swivel end (not universal) too as the plugs go in at a slight a angle. I can post pics if you like, I've gone through just about every combo and this is by far the best

That's actually the 4.8 which is quite a bit different from the 4.4 n63 engine. There

Are quite a few n63/S63 spark plug change videos up on YouTube. Other then variations in the upper intake/air cleaners, it's all the same wether it be a f10 m5 or a e70 50i. Here is a decent video on a f10: it's all super easy once you get the air filters out of the way (btw, good time to get new air filters too while you have them off)

Just be mindful when you torque down the spark plugs. Make sure you got them threaded in correctly and do not over torque them.
