Water leak in Trunk of '10 X6M drivers side

So my '10 X6M is still waiting a few years for me to rebuild the replacement s63 motor.....meanwhile now i have a water leak in the hatch somehow. drivers side rear compartment where the amplifier is. IDK where the water is coming in from. Only when it rains obviously. i put a car cover over it now for about a month and no water.


Since it has been sitting for a few years in the driveway, the rear has sagged from the air compressor not running.......this could be adding to the leak?


Anyone have issues with water in the trunk of a X6 before I rip everything apart in the trunk?

I believe its usually the sunroof drains getting clogged. There are drains at each corner. I blew the front drains out with a decent air compressor but not sure that fully cleared them out.

I haven't really looked into the rear drains...they seem like they would be a lot more work.

Ive had a bathtub in my trunk once. Same dripping over the amplifier. There’s 2 exit drain rear top hatch. The rubber tube that connects from the sunroof frame to the exit had lost the self sealing. Drop the rear headliner and secure the ends with zip ties.

Pouring vinegar down the drains on a regular basis will help keep the sludge out once you clear them out.

The proper way to clean the rear drains. First, remove the rear tilt glass, and rear glass.

I vacuumed my drains out, found a YouTube video on it. Use a soft vinyl tube and tape it to the vacuum for good suction. Don't blow them out, this can cause the connections to come lose and you'll have to take the whole roof apart to fix. Also, I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the trunk compartment, to drain it just in case it were to fill up again. Good luck!

Finally got around to cleaning the rear sunroof drains as one of mine was clogged. If you park your car where leaves or other debris falls on it, I would definitely clean the drains as preventive maintenance.

I ended up ordering a "flexible tube brush" (link below) that seemed to work ok with warm water and vinegar in a lab style safety squeeze bottle. Poured some water in the sunroof track area to flow back to the drain but worked the brush from where the line exits near the trunk hinge.

Im sure there are better options but this is what I used, probably could have done just fine with a shorter one or one with slightly stiffer bristles cause it was caked in there. If its not already clogged this should work really well though:

To add to this, I had a leak at the rubber cable grommets from the body to the rear hatch. I had to remove them, clean, and silicone them in place. The clip system they use is dumb and the rubber curls over time and leaks.

Any idea how I am getting a small swimming pool in both rear quarters behind the little covers in the boot / trunk?

I don't have a sunroof and yet it still floods. Already taken out my boot lift control module.

Dealing with this on my 2013 X5M right now. I haven't fixed the leak yet, but it got inches of water in the back, including both sides and the battery area. I replaced the hatch lift box (module) and the Transfer Case Control Module (one Chinese new version and the ATC used from salvage)...managed to fix all the codes/dash light and hatch luckily. Now I have to find the leaks. Good luck. I'll update what I find on the source of the leak. But for now happy to have all electrical faults cleared.

Its so annoying. I wonder if there's anything I can spray or put down, maybe baking soda or WD40? To prevent it from rusting

My guess would be the seals around the tail lights.

Water leaks in from the grommet that connects from the body to the hatch. Common problem and happened to me. I cleaned it real well and siliconed. Been fine for years now. The grommet is a bad design. I would silicone all the grommets. They all leak.

It's coming from above so it can't be this but I will check them anyway

How does it get to the rear quarters from here? Somehow into the roof and then all the way down the inside of the body? It seems like I would have water elsewhere if this was the case? I'll check them also anyway and report back.
