Cracked vent tubes = $1800?

Check engine light on. Took car to stealer ship, diagnosis, cracked vent tubes. Not covered under CPO vehicle with 26k miles. $1800 repair. Am I crazy or does this sound like a no lube bohica?

Can you be more specific? What are vent tubes? Did dealer write down part numbers on the estimate?

Vent tubes

Was told they are the corrugated lines under engine heat shield. I told SA we will need to talk to BMWNA as this was nuts.

Vent tubes

Update

Just got call from SA. BMWNA has agreed to cover replacement of 5 lines. Do not know part #'s yet. My cost for repair will be $100.

What's interesting about this little "ordeal" is that the BMW dealer refused to cover under CPO.

All BMW CPO's warranties are "exclusionary", i.o.w. if it is NOT listed, it is covered. Period.

And, if this is a BMWNA "goodwill" repair, there is no deductible ... Why are you charged $100?

Read your CPO policy ... show it to the dealer. Remind them of the terms of your contract.

Let us know.

Total BS. While I understand doing so for a V8, this is yet another reason why I wouldn't pay more for CPO or an extended warranty. Money's better off in the bank.

I replaced them myself with about $200 in parts. There's one bolt connecting each tube to the valve covers that can't be accessed without removing ALL of the metal bridging, tubing, vacuum lines, etc to replace them. Have them do the injector recall while they're in there.

Here's my cracked tubes, they were the typical brittle BMW plastic and broke completely at the slightest touch w/ 63k.

Why do you believe everything the dealer tells you? There's a reason why many of us call them "stealers" ...

If it's Goodwill, you should not be charged $100!

Keep in mind also, the part that they call the "filtered air duct" is something that was changed, part of the N63 CCP, but us M owners didn't get that. The rubber gasket for the turbo inlet on the old style is orange, the new ones are black. I busted the driver's side air duct and had to replace that part which was $265 or so, but I did get the updated one with the black turbo inlet gasket. I can post a couple pics if anyone is interested in more.

Jupiter, where did you get that info about the orange vs black gasket. When I ordered my parts, I ordered the filtered air duct and gaskets not knowing the gaskets were part of the duct. I tested both the black and orange, black still allowed wiggle room of the tube in the bottom left picture, so I used the orange due to having the tighter fit.

This...also, have you considerd installing catless downpipes to keep the extreme hot engine temps considerably lower which result in these cheap plastic pieces cracking...good job James

OP, crankcase vent lines are not covered under CPO. And the X5M's pcv hoses are pricey when purchased from the dealer.

Bmw has changed their goodwill policy. Most goodwill coverage is now 50-95% parts and labor. They use a formula based on your vehicles in service date and mileage.

BMW also changed their parts warranty coverage. If BMW pays 100% of a goodwill repair and your car is out of warranty then those parts will not have the 2 year/unlimited mileage parts/replacement warranty. The repair would have absolutely no warranty at all.

If you pay any portion of the goodwill repair, even 5%, then you get the 2 year warranty.

So due to the fact they are not covered by CPO, if you don't pay the $100 portion of the goodwill then the parts will have no warranty. also, if you have a part replaced under warranty and it fails after your vehicle is out of warranty then the part is not covered under the 2yr warranty. Basically, once your warranty is expired then all of your parts replaced are also out of warranty. No more 2 year coverage of parts even if they were replaced just before your warranty expires.

Can you verify that the orange gasket is the updated one? The Orange one I removed was very loose, didn't provide a good seal (or so it seemed)... The new black one seems a lot better.

My SA said the exact opposite. He said the orange were the old ones...

Picked up car, my bill was 5% of cost. As mentioned hoses are not covered under CPO. $29 labor, $31.38 parts. I paid and ran for the door!

Not with a picture as I don't have a CCP in front of me right now at work. But I have done nearly 100 of them and can guarantee the new gaskets are orange. I cross referenced the N63 stock turbo inlet seals with S63 turbo inlet seals and they are the same part # on real oem. That part # is 13718639556. The new turbo inlet seals that come with the CCP are part # 13718646450 per SIB 11 06 14.

Hmm, the part number I have for the filtered air duct piece is 13717848152. That is she one with black seals.

This is really troublesome these changes in OE parts warranty ...!

Are you sure? Do you have an internal bulletin you can post?

Is any of this in writing on the repair order, or on the customer receipt after payment?

In my book, if it is not in writing, it doesn't exist.

The BMW.com website clearly says that BMW OE parts have a 2 year/unlimited miles and labor warranty. My paperwork from the dealer say nothing!

Volvo is going the opposite direction: OE parts installed by dealer now have a LIFE TIME parts and labor warranty.

M5James,

Was there any special tooling needed to replace the "Filtered Air Ducts"? I'm noticing the same oil residue on mine and have a slight rough idle. About how long did this job take and are there any major sticking points?

Thank you,

-Greg

No special tools, just taking off a decent amount of stuff to get access to two hex bolts in a crappy location parallel to the valve covers. What initially started this whole removal was the gasket feeding from the intake tubing into the turbos themselves was loose, so see which ones fit the tightest for you based on the orange or black gaskets mentioned above.

- remove the airbox
- remove the two bolts (one on each side, bottom left pic from the collage above) feeding the intake tubes into the turbos (bottom right pic in the collage above) and be careful as the bolts drop easily nor is their a way to get a straight shot at them - use magnetic bits or throw some painters tape on the tip of your bit for a tighter fit
- remove the forward metal bridge (picture 1 below) over the turbos that holds a couple flex lines, careful not to break the plastic flexible one (corrugated one in top right corner of top right collage above) that connects left to right to each PCV/filtered air duct valve as it's a common failure item
- remove the two metal shields (picture 2 below) connecting to the valve covers, which are what ultimately limit access to the two last bolts (picture 3 below) before you can replace the PCV lines.
- reverse of remocal

If this site could auto adjust pics, I'd be able to show you. Admins...
