Please help understand TPMS system.

I have a 2012 X5 which I bought new, and it came with 18" rims. I have just purchased a set of 19" factory take offs from a F15 X5, and I will use the 19's with summer tires, while the old 18's are going to become a winter set used with winter tires.

I am trying to figure out the whole TPMS situation. The stock 18's have stock TPMS which works properly. The new 19's also come with TPMS, but I understand F15 TPMS does not work with E70.

Should I purchase new TPMS from the dealer? Will it physically fit the new rims? When changing the wheels, will I need to reprogram something every time?

Nah no need for dealer. Find HUF NORTH AMERICA “OE” sensor with the correct built date of your vehicle. The date cut off is around 9/2010. So find the one that is made for after that date since yours is a 2012. HUF has another one that has the “INTELLISENSE” that needs to be program. So make sure you get the OE one that you can just reset your tpms on your iDrive each time you swap the set out.
Theres other brand too that is cheaper and will work. As long as they are labeled OE that means theres no programming, just relearn iDrive reset.

Yes but you can get it at other place for less and it comes with new valve stems. i.e advanced auto with 25%off, rockauto.com Denso(my choice)

First of all, how do I register these new ID numbers through the OBD port, and will I have to re-register every time I swap winter/summer set up?

If I went with the dealer, do I still have to go through the registering process?

That instructions is much of universal explanation and not directly Bmw terms(relearn/reset iDrive). However if you look closely to the pic of the denso its got the part # stamped on it “rde012”.

You can also call around to your local tire retailers (like Discount Tire/Tire America/Bell Tire/etc) and see if they can give you a good deal. They will also have the tools to activate the sensors. Sometimes an aftermarket TPMS requires activation.

x5 n00b here, piggybacking on this thread as I'm curious. Sounds like a direct TPMS system but I haven't noticed a pressure readout in iDrive. Is it like our Subaru, which is the worst of both worlds, uses direct TPMS but doesn't do a readout (only tells you when one is low)? or am I missing a screen somewhere?

You have no model year info listed so I'm not sure if this would apply to you or not (CCC/CIC/NBT???)...but on newer (CIC/NBT) "direct" TPMS systems...tire pressure and temperature can be coded-on to appear in the display. Check the coding forums or coding software to see which one has the capability as well as what model/model year it can be done to:

Checking your "cold" tire pressure should be a regular thing one should do regardless if you have the direct or indirect TPMS system. The owners manual should give details on what occurs if a tire gets low (should get a warning)...and the iDrive screen should indicate WHICH tire is low if you get the tire pressure warning when you pull up the screen in iDrive (low tire will be yellow/orange instead of green).

They key to buying the right sensors, as stated earlier, is the build date of the car. There are some versions of aftermarket TPMS that won't communicate with the BMW system, depending on build date (ask me how I know). Get the right part number.

Big thanks to everyone who helped for the info. Purchased and installed the sensors from Rockauto, installed the new rims, and everything functions properly - just had to do reset in the i-drive system.

Any ideas on where the sensors are? I have a 2010 X5M. I assume the build date will have something to do with it....but I dont know where to look for that information either. thanks!

Replacement of the rdc module requires it to be coded to the vehicle.
The link you provided with the picture is pointing to the rdc module. Tpms are on your wheel valve stems.

Tagging onto this post... I have a Right Front Tire Low warning on the iDrive. Reset it and it comes back after a couple miles. Swapped the RF and LF tires, reset again and the iDrive still says it's the right tire that's low. Bad RDC?
