Route 66 Warranty 2012 BMW X5 Xdrive50i M Sport
I recently purchased a 2012 BMW X5 Xdrive50i M Sport with 84k miles on it. I had it inspected by a BMW specific auto shop and the car is in top shape. Because I financed a portion with my Credit Union, I was offered a Route 66 Warranty. The only available warranty I was offered was the First Street (due to miles already on the car). This is what it covers (see attachment)
This is offered for 36K miles for $1700. Given the problems with the N63 engine in this car, what is your opinion? Should I purchase the warranty? It doesn't cover most maintenance things so it would be protection against big engine failures. Also, the car has never had major work, just maintenance, spark plugs, and ignition coils. Take a look at the attachment and let me know what you think. |

I have the Route 66 for my x5M... I got it right before they stopped supporting the x5M... anyway, it's worth it. If the motor or trans goes, it's nice to have some backup.

Don't waste your $ on that warranty.
At one time Route 66 was a forum favorite for X5 3rd party warranties - back when they offered the 'easy street' exclusionary warranty, but they stopped offering that specific warranty on X5's several years back. This 'first street' warranty they're offering you is an inclusionary warranty (vs. exclusionary) meaning only listed items are covered. There's a reason it's only $1700. The only warranties that will truly cover your a** on these 50i's is an exclusionary warranty. Unfortunately few companies offer an exclusionary warranty now - I have CNA only because Route 66 wouldn't write an X5 any longer, but I heard even CNA no longer writes X5's. Shop around, I'm sure somebody offers an exclusionary warranty |

Don’t get it. Bank the money. Notice how the covered terms are in generalities. You’ll be fighting tooth-and-nail for them to cover the specific issues of this engine. Unless it’s exclusionary (which clearly spells out what is NOT covered), stay away.
