2008 4.8i - Steering Wheel Buttons Malfunction

Hi just curious if anyone had this problem. My steering wheel volume buttons, radio up/down and heated steering wheel functions just stopped working all of a sudden. The heated steering wheel light doesnt come on and the other buttons have no effect also. However the horn works. Any idea whats wrong?

I did have my valve stem seals/gaskets/coolant pipe/head gaskets etc done recently but that shouldn't be related? (engine/transmission was taken out if that matters?)

Not on this particular car but my other car the clock spring in the steering wheel wore out and had a break in the line.

I agree with Twinz as it's most likely the clock spring assembly which rests behind the steering wheel on the steering column. I just replaced mine last weekend with a used one from Ebay for about $90. Found out that there were 2/3 different assemblies based on how the E70 is optioned. So make sure that the assembly has the heated steering wheel option should this be the issue..

None, what-so-ever.. You'll have to turn the steering wheel totally to the right, then to the left to get rid of the 4x4 error message. You will also have to have to clear the air bag error message with a diagonstic scan tool.

After everything was said and done the thing I noticed was that the DSC/AWS error message didn't clear right away. It cleared after about 2-3 days and hasn't returned. I believe that's bc the X5 had to be driven to re-claibrate the steering sensor.
