How To Put A Car In Neutral With No Key - 2009 X6

Hi Guys,

I just purchases a 2009 X6 from an auction. The problem is that it came without a key. If someone can shed some light for me I would really appreciate this.

1. Is it possible to somehow put the car into neutral without a key?

2. I was told that only an official BMW dealership can give me a key that will work, as it actually has to be ordered from Germany. Is this the case, or is it possible to have a 3rd party company do it?

Thank you!

Answer to Q #1: Unfortunately you didn't give enough data about the X6 (model nomenclature)...because depending on which engine/transmission combo you have...you may be able to put the car in neutral using the tool (see #1 in diagram below). But again, you may not have the tool depending on where your X6 falls in the production run:

Answer to Q #2: How much do you know & understand about BMW's EWS (immobilizing) system? The vehicle will not start unless the key has the encrypted ISN individual serial number) that was coded into the key and other control modules off the assembly line. Only BMW has the database that has the encryption.

Jesus freakin' H! Really?

On my GC, there was a small cable to pull on in the console. On my FJ, you simply stick your finger into a small opening just ahead of the shifter. WTH do German automobile manufacturers feel the need to complicate $hit so much?

If you have the 8speed (ZF 8HP) you will most likely have to jack up the car, crawl under it, remove the transmission protective plate, and on the drivers side of the transmission you will see a small bolt (think its 8 or 10 mm) that you can see will engage a lever if it is tightened all the way. This is how it is on my 2012 X5. That in combination with the only way to check and fill the transmission fluid is to be underneath it while the friggen thing is running and its spitting oil out the fill plug in your face and all over the exhaust makes one think there are some Sadistic people at BMW / ZF....
