Driver's Side Speakers not Working
Hello,
New to this forum as this is my first X5. I have a new to me 2012 X5 3.5i. This has the upgraded sound system (as standard on 2012). I noticed that neither the driver's side tweeter or the driver's side mid range are working. I did a quick search in the archives for mentions of this, but did not find any. Before I start taking doors apart, do you think it is more likely that the connection issue would be in the door hinge area, or somewhere near the amplifier. Thanks for any advice. G. |

Since its just that door not working, I would assume its at the speaker level and not caused by the amplifer. The connections for each speaker are right at the speaker so you will have to pull the door panel to reach it.

OP - Any update on what you found?
I just noticed my system sounded funny on a road trip, my drivers door tweeter is out. Like you, I checked around and its pretty buttoned up, guess door panel removal is required just to get the tweeter out to test it. I better check all the rest of the speakers before I order parts.

No update yet as I have been side tracked. I did order a set of panel tools from amazon for about $16. That is here now, so it is waiting for me to decide if it is more important to change the tranny fluid or fix the driver's door speakers.

Dang it - I went ahead and checked all other speakers and both the midrange and tweeter in the driver's side rear door are out too! Which is suspicious because that door was damaged (hit & run of course) and replaced, but I swear I made a point to listen to those speakers when I picked up the vehicle.
My troubleshooting just tripled in scope. On the trim removal tools - are those Essential? I used to remove my M3 door panels with a putty knife with no problems. Do I really need the tools? Got a link to the ones you ordered? Thanks.

I doubt that it is absolutely required, but to reduce the possibility fo scratches, this seemed like a good idea. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this is the youtube video I watched on what to do for the doors

Wow that is a superior video. Thanks for providing that.
I have a plastic spatula thing, and some other gear so I am going to attempt to take my two doors off this wknd. Wondering how to test these three speakers safely, no idea if I should hook them to my garage stereo just to see if they operate. Maybe they'll have ohm rating stamped on the back side? I better get my Google on. Maybe just swapping speakers between doors will narrow it down.

Good luck so far yesterday on the rear door speakers - Not sure if the wiring plug was not seated in all the way but once I popped the panel and re-connected it, both speakers worked fine!
Today I will check out the driver's door.

I'm glad to give it then! Same issue, the tweeter wiring was not plugged into the midrange where it should have been. It was just dangling in there.
Boy I have to blame the Collision shop who replaced my rear door (moved all components & trim over to new door) and repaired the front one a couple months ago. I have to assume they just didn't seat the wire connector into the connection securely, and they just fell out with vibration. It's not hard to insert them and they do click in and are a pain to get back out. But I don't have another explanation, as I am quite certain I listened at least to the rear door speakers when I picked it up after repair. Oh well, nice to have this out of the way, and Gee my stereo sounds great again! ** One NOTE ** - Be careful not to over-tighten the trim screws when re-installing the panel. It feels like they seat into a plastic receiver/nut in the body, and I slightly stripped one of mine when re-installing. It wasn't one for the door handle grab rail, so I just left it. If it were for the rail which you pull on to shut the door, I would have looked for a slightly larger diameter screw and used that instead.

Final update on my door speaker. It looks like the previous owner had done something that caused the door card to be removed on the driver's side. It appears that when they did that, they broke the connector to the drivers's side mid range speaker (the tweeter was still connected to the mid range). I bought a replacement connector off of ebay, soldered it in, and I now have sound coming out of the drivers door. Yay!
