s63 engine rebuild and upgrades
so hopefully ill have the sleeved block back in January 2022
(2010 bmw x6m with a 2011 x5m s63 motor) ![]() i am noticing almost all of the bolts on the motor are 'one-time-use'. does anyone know if there is a part number for a kit of all the replacement bolts on a short block assembly? tesos in UAE mentioned it in one of his utube videos but i never was able to get the part number or numbers. id hate to have to go bolt by bolt. fml BMW parts department aren't really all that helpful. ![]()

still waiting on the main journal bearings, but in the meantime, im having a hard time with finding the replacement aluminum bolts for the engine rebuild. i assumed there was a kit part number on the bmw dealer parts sites but cant find anything. anyone else do a rebuild on the s63? what did you do for replacement of the one-time-use bolts?

Thats excellent! What pistons and rods did you go for and stock sizing?

Thanks
CP-Carrillo Forged pistons 10:1 compression, pistons rated for sleeves Moly dry film coating on the skirts and ceramic coating on the crowns. You may ask why, it's a why not. Heavy duty pins Arrow forged rods I do have regrets / buyers remorse, mainly from the zillion dollars needed on replacement / rebuild parts and if I should spend the few grand on things like sensors and hoses. Money trap isn't even the word. I had just wished I bought a s63tu instead of a regular s63 replacement. But that probably still wouldn't help with the fueling limitations of the direct injection issues. Wish we could just have a new intake mani fabricated with fuel nozzles, spray in more fuel that way and just have it tuned for it. Possible? Dreaming? |

a few tuning places are saying additional fuel is not needed as the stock injectors can handle upwards of 900-1000hp, i assume this is with the WMI injection and not on their own.

I took a break for a couple months. Looking to start back up with the engine work next month.
Here's where I'm at so far: Block is back from machine shop. I had the cast iron sleeves installed. Original s63 has the curved rods. Upgraded to the pro extreme m5 rods which are straight. Had to notch out the block a little to accommodate the rod bolt. Wasn't too worried about this as I see the newer s63tu had this notch done by the factory. Present issue is the oil sprayers. On the original s63 engine I have, there is a single oil sprayer with two nozzles, one nozzle for each cylinder. This oil sprayer is located in the center of the valley which, of course, touches the upgraded M5 rods. On the s63tu, the factory relocated and separated the oil sprayers on the outside of the valley. Since we cannot accommodate that, few options: 1. Try to have a custom oil sprayer made that has a flat head and does not rub the rod bolt. 2. Not recommended but some do..... Shave/grind some of the rod bolt to allow clearance.. IMO I don't want to shave down the rod bolt because that's taking a lot of strength. 3. Plug the oil sprayer hole and notch a small opening at the top of the rod where the bearing is (12 o'clock) to allow some oil to "fling" up to the piston. From a few experts that I have worked with, Porsche racing has this notch on factory forged rods, and some performance Chevy motors. I am leaning towards #3 but will first explore #1.

I asked, they said no, I assume cuz it's not enough sales/interest, Plus maybe something to do with a difficulty in tuning. But thanks for the idea.

they are mostly the same but still has some differences. for example, the piston compress is different. i found this out by accident when i had the block sleeved and needed new pistons and rods. the m5 rods are straight rods like 99% of the world. my stock rods are straight but have an angled bottom at about 45 degrees which allows for clearance. the s63tu has a notch in the bottom of the cylinder walls to allow clearance for the straight rods found in the m5 etc. i had to grind out the notch on my s63 to allow for the straight m5 rods.
piston compression varies 9:1, 9.5:1, 10:1, etc. if you deviate from the stock pistons then of course will need a tune. i think either way will need a tune, even if you have one made very conservative, just to get all the knocks out and have it run smooth. but yes, you can have a s63tu with your regular dme, just need it tuned for it. a few places i spoke with were surprised i did not go with an s63tu from the get-go. i told them this is what was available for the money at the time (covid-----2021) Quote:

Few small updates, got the project going again.....
#1 gave up on trying to get made or find custom oil sprayers. Especially from finding out that they have a spring in them to open and close based on pressure. P.s. they don't open on idle. I found some bolts that had threads of m12x1. Using that to plug up the oil sprayer holes and a drop of red loctite to seal it. Plug is : https://www.racetronix.biz/p/metric-...k/fit-plgm1210 Will notch the rods at 12 o'clock on both sides of the rods so it will fling some oil up towards the neck of the rod where the piston is. #2 still fooling around with the main bearings. After going back and forth about the color chart for bearings it finally seems that the old bearing chart of yellow green and violet offered 3 standard sizes. The new color chart simply offers more colors which is more in between sizes. So you can dial in your clearances better.

Annoyed at these prices on the fuel injectors. I'll need 8 new ones at the index 12 just for peace of mind that we do things right. Cheapest I find is $367 at bmwpartshub.com for the 13538616079
$$$$$$$$$

Yeh I'm waiting for the last minute to buy them. Kinda wish I didn't sell my index 11s on eBay when I tore down the motor a few years ago

Rebuild is underway. Had to go 1size thicker on main bearing cap 1. Went with a violet cap as it got us in range better. Used both the dial bore gauge and plastigauge brand name (red). Crank is in , main caps in, 3 sets of bolts in and torqued and stretched. Always missing pieces need to order.
I have the new oil pump but forgot to order the 3 o rings for the oil tubes (large and skinny). Got those flying in from FCP auto. Prob won't continue again til weekend after next. More images to follow

Checking bearing clearance. Trying to get it closer to the . 038 range
Obv once the new bolts are torqued down and stretched, it should get closer
