Someone stole my X5 without a key...
We have a 2005 X5. In June someone stole it out of our driveway. The doors were locked (we're always very careful about locking them because we live near a high school and the kids will steal out of your cars).
We have the two keys plus the plastic valet key for it. Anyway they drove it about 40 miles and then went through it and just stole our nav disc and our iPod charger. They abandoned the vehicle near our home and we found it two days later with just a broken mirror and they scraped the side of the tire and fender on something. Crazy thing is... they locked the damned doors and set the alarm! The insurance and car lot couldn't believe it was stolen without a key. They grilled us and we showed them we had all three keys. The BMW lot checked the car to see if there were any other keys made for it that were active and they said that our keys were the only keys in the system. Now it's December and this morning I go out to my car and climb in and the driver's side seat belt is buckled when I climb in... I knew something was off given I drove it last night and would never have locked the drivers side seatbelt into itself. I leave an ipod in my car every night but I drop it under the seat so people can't see it. Our windows are tinted limo black all around so it's hard to see in anyway, specially in the dark. Anyway I remember locking my doors last night because I dropped my keys as I as fumbling to lock it and then picked them up and locked it. This morning my car was locked. They set the radio to an AM station, stole my ipod and RE-LOCKED MY CAR. Now how in the hell is someone doing this? I'm about to sell this damned car because someone can obviously just get into it anytime they want. I thought these cars were thief-proof? Should I get ANOTHER alarm put on it to keep someone out of it? Has anyone heard of this happening? |

Sounds impossible. And no offense, but your probably the one who wants to steal an x5 and you want us to tell you how without a key.

I recommend buying a wireless webcam and point it at your driveway using the motion activated feature to find out who's effing with you. That's a lot cheaper than buying another ipod.
Where do you keep the keys when they aren't in your car? Could someone come into your house and grab them? You should park your X5 in your garage. That would end your problem. I had my car broken into twice during the one year I lived in CA. Just another reason I don't like the left coast.

That's the crazy thing... We have two sets of keys and a valet all of which we keep in our home. Our home has a very nice alarm system on it and we set it every night. There is absolutely no way that someone came in and took the keys.
We don't have any other adults living in our home and our son is only 3.5 years old so we know he didn't do it! Shoot if I had a teenager I'd be blaming them for this crap! Do you think they could be using one of these on our car? http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...50438141762214 It might make sense because once they decode it they could easily open it. Though I don't get how a small time thief would get hold of a set like that... Should we have another alarm system installed on it? Given that when they unlock our doors it shuts off the stock alarm. |

Obviously if your stock alarm isnt working, then get another one. Or get all new keys. Or a cam outside your house.

Does it have keyless start?
My fear with my M3 is that with the right scanners, they could hack the system and drive off with the car. Quote:
I know nothing about security measures built into modern wireless keys, but I do remember way back when Fords only had about 30 different keys to save on manufacturing cost and make key replacement a breeze... Who's to say BMW didn't cut corners like that too and use a narrow frequency band and simple encryption? |

A cam would be a lot cheaper than a new alarm in your car. Plus then you would get the satisfaction of catching the thief.

Yeah I think I'm going to go to Costco and buy their indoor/outdoor camera system that only records when there is motion. I would love to catch these people that are screwing with our car.
This has made me completely paranoid that they can just come and steal my car anytime they want. We have a newer 5 series in our driveway and they have never bothered it. I just don't get it. |

lol No, she is really freaked out about this stuff so she's ready to put a 1k dollar alarm on the car and put cameras everywhere. We live in a nice neighborhood in Northern California... then again people always come to the nice neighborhoods to steal.

thats a dumb request dude, its not like he can't just go and find a few pics of an ordinary 2005 X5 on the net somewhere...
I don't see why he would be lying to us... but whatever!

I'll say it again. Use your garage. BMWs deserve to be inside anyhow...IMHO.

Thank you... I thought it was rather stupid as well. I live in Northern California... I work in Marin. BMW's are so common here they call them Basic Marin Wheels.

I have never heard of that happening either. I would say a camera would be your best bet... or a big dog leashed near the car (probably be much more funny)
