New member, with an old question...
Just joined the Forum today, so I am sure this question has been seen before. Bought a 2016 X5, but only one key/remote was available. has anyone come up with a way to avoid buying an extra one for several hundred dollars? Surely in this technology era, someone has figured out a cheaper solution.
Thanks Teeray |

I don't know the exact amounts but a plain key can be had for less than $150. But it is just to unlock your drivers door and any other keyed locks in the car. I believe it's flat so it would fit in a wallet.
I've heard you can re code a used key fob at the dealer, but the key in the remote would be different at that point, if it came with one. This doesn't exactly answer your question but there's a option with the "valet key". Depends if you're after that or keyless entry etc. |

you can aways buy those china after market fobs on ebay for cheap but you still gotta pay someone to code it to your car. Still cheaper than buying a second fob from BMW + coding

Thanks for advice
I appreciate those who took the time to give me some suggestions. My plan is to order one on Ebay (unless someone tells me that I will probably get ripped off) then look up the instructions for coding it myself.

I dont know of any ebay key fobs you can use. I purchased a used one and it will need to be reflashed by a locksmith with the right software. Good luck finding one. And then you still need the dealer to program it to your car.
